Since I'm a practical man in an un-practical place, I must define my list to what I use; the critters I seek have made my choices:
1. 22-250 for dogs (yodel and howlers)
2. 264 winnie for goats and sheepies
3. 338 winnie for blackies, moose and boo'
(for boo' because of ole grizz)
4. 416 Taylor for grizz/brownie (and also in
case an ornery boo' charges)
5. my Belgian Auto-5 12 ga. I've used for 30
years...too many memories to forget her!
I could think of several others, but this list is those I continually reach for when out-bound. (except for the 416...it's new, but have great hopes for her!)
best,
bhtr

This is assuming that I could have anything I want, regardless of price.

1. A Browning Citori 4-barrel skeet set (12, 20, 28, .410). 28 inch barrels. Can this count as one gun? I'd want the 12 ga. barrel bored to accept 3 1/2 in. magnum loads as well as screw-in chokes. Then it could be used for trap, waterfowl, and upland shooting in addition to skeet.

2. A super-accurate .22 rimfire, maybe an Anschutz, with a Leupold 4.5-14 40mm scope.

3. A 22-250 custom heavy-barrel, 26 in. barrel, on a Remington 40X action. 6.5-20 40mm Leupold scope.

4. A "mountain rifle" .270 weighing a max. of 7 1/3 pounds with scope, sling, and ammo. Probably on a Dakota action, 22 in. barrel, classic straight wood stock of French walnut, checkered 22 lines to the inch in a fleur-de-lis pattern, 3.5-10 40mm Leupold scope.

5. A Dakota 76 in 375 Rem. Ultra. Mag., synthetic stock, Leupold 2.5-8 scope. (Basically a copy of Saeed's 375/404)

I'm assuming that all the rifles will consistently shoot groups of 0.5 inch or less at 100 yards. The 22-250 should shoot 5-shot groups of 0.3 or less, and the .22 rimfire should shoot 5-shot groups of 0.25 or less at 50 yards.

1. Ritterbusch take-down in .375HH with a schmidt und bender 1.5x5- german claw mounts 25in barrel with express sights- for good plains game rifle

2. hagn single shot in 450 Dakota- open sights 24in barrel- all african large-big game

3. dakota 76 in 338win mag- zeiss fixed 6 power with quick detaches and open sights 24in barrel larger game such as elk and moose- bears

4. oberndorf mauser type m with fish scale checkering and a old swarovski or hendsolt rifle scope on german claw mounts-likely a 9.3x62 this would be my gun for hunting europe

5. winchester classic m70 in 280 remington with a loathar walther barrel- number 3 contour. no open sights. swaro fixed 6 power scope on regular 2 peice bases. 22.8 in barrel. this would be my sheep gun

I would take this gun and only use the action. I would take the disgusting david miller designed stock and throw it somewhere... a good stock is a must on this one! action completely worked over ofcourse...

These questions are intersting but scary.....
I need more than five guns.
But, if push came to shove, my answer would be:
Sir I have only five, the other 97 fell outta my boat while duck hunting.

Assuming that a T/C counts as more than one gun....

1. Glock 23 40s&w --> Light, portable, and delivers plenty of discouragement.
2. 12ga Benelli Montefeltro --> A fine semi-auto action in a gun that fits very well. Also, filled with slugs for
3. Rem 700 24" 280AI --> Great trajectory and plenty of WHOP for most all non-dangerous big game. Great trajectory too.
4. Rem 700 26" 243AI varmint barrel -->
For all the vermin from p. dogs to deer where gun weight isn't an issue. Trajectory will be comparable to the .280AI
5. Rem Speedmaster .22LR --> Simple, reliable, full size, tube fed .22 rifle.

I'm particularly fond of Burris optics. So there would be a 4-16 on the .243 and a 2-8 on the .280.

Practically speaking, that's as close as I can come to perfection in 5 guns for what I do.

Great topic. Here's my list:

1. CZ 550 Lux in 9.3x62. A Blaser R93 in the same along with the 28/70 and 6.5x57 barrels available in Europe would be a pricey alternative. I've been trying to get information about the Mauser Model 66S and its interchangeable barrels. If anyone could help with that I'd be most appreciative.

2. Winchester Model 1894 Carbine in .30WCF

3. Winchester Model 9422

4. Beretta 1201FP (with available 28" modified choke barrel)

5. Smith & Wesson Model 686, 3" barrel

Its been fun to see all the different posts.
