WELL... NOT as bad as Montana, but here's a story of my last min ELk I shot a few weeks ago...

Well to make a long story short, I went on a solo hunting tripThe pics aren't all that good but HELL, I was by myself .... HEHE

I went to where I smacked papa last year and figured someone would push something back over.. there was a lot of rigs by the road I started 2.5 hours before legal shooting and got to the saddle I wanted to be. I ended up seeing 12 cows but no bulls. One little spikey in the group But I was fiddleing with my camcorder trying to get it to work and didnt get a pic of them. I just got it back from, the shop and they reset all the settings. Ohh well.

Anyways, I worked back up this hill and back further then Ive ever been in this area. I found a nice canyon around 2:00 and by 2:30 figured Id sit and watch the bowl till late evening.. I had a 350- 400 yard shot max Im guessing in a 150 deg. View.. ALL snow covered and nice !!!

Well the second I sat down, Here was the view I saw instantly !!!!Sorry it's a bit blurry... But it was a bit far out and the camorder was focussing on something closer....

 -

If I pan out here is what it looks like :

 -

NOW, LOOK real close at the black dot. YEP, elieve it or not thats the elk. It wasn't all that far but the picture makes it a small item to see. It was only 350-400 MAX I figure.... NOTICE the snow spot on the DEAD tree for a reference. You can still see him in this picture if you're good.... BUT....

 -

BUT...... panning out even further looks like this, GOOD luck finding it in this picture..... HAHA

 -

~After I dropped the hammer from that location, I wasnt even sure I smacked it. I was confident of the shot but when I reput the scope back on, it had moved and I didn't see it limping. Truth be told I lobbed another shot at it when It stepped back out but Even though it didn't run off I was still puzzled. It wasn't till later when I found out what happened. I walked over to its bed and Found NO blood. I was cussing myself and videotaping his tracks and bed area. Here is the bed he was lieing in :

 -

I continued to follow his tracks not knowing what to expect. I figured he was 100 miles away and I missed him.. BUT how ?!?! At 350 yards he was bedded down and the bullet should have gotten him good. SURE, you can say not to take a facing shot, But I did.

After 4 mins of looking at the ground and walking slow I saw this through the trees It only took me 2 seconds to drop the camcorder and KABANG !!!!! Elk dropped at 40-50 yards like a ton-o bricks. LOOK closely through the trees folks.. you'll see him too !!!!

 -

Here is 3 drops of blood I saw after I dropped him in his tracksAmaisingly I didnt se any other blood the whole time !!!

 -

After he dropped he didnt die right away, I had to walk up to him.. this is him before I layed the final shot into him

Elk down !!!!!!

 -

 -

 -

 -

BULLET hole and Bullet in the leg. Lok closely and youll see the first shot laying right inside the front shoulder. I realized what happened was the first shot shattered the left front leg of the elk. It only had 3 legs to walk on but the shot didnt hit any vitals. When I found his bed and walked up a ways, It was trying to LIMP off. Thats when I dropped it with a better shot, then followed up with a final neck shot. Anyways, here is one of the 2 bullets I found.

Moosie,

Welcome to the forums, glad to see join us.

I get the shivers just looking at all that snow!

I wonder how cold it was there?

We hunted South Africa last June, and in the mornings it was pretty cold - went about 2 degrees below!

I had to make sure I had a fire going all night in my hut, even slept in my socks!

It was teh first time for me to go hunting during their winter there, so I booked a hunt in September for next year - just to make sure it is warm enough.

I think I prefer the sheer heat of Chete in Zimbabwe, where it gets to about 115 in the shade - when you can find it.

Good story and interesting camera work, but don't you feel that you owe it to this majestic of an animal to finish him ASAP after you wounded him with a marginal shot? I will be saving for years to hunt elk and I can't wait until I do. I hope I am succesful as you were, but I know I'll be a bit more respectful to my animal than you were to yours. I love to hunt, but the worst feeling in the world that I have experienced is having to finish an animal up close after making a poor shot. And I don't care who you are reading this EVERYONE has missed or made a poor shot on an animal, no one is immortal in the field, maybe from a bench, but not on the field. I don't mean for this to come off as a flame thread by any sense of the word, but take my opinion as you will, I think there are many others on here who would agree with me. Congratulations on your kill.

Kind of cool while they're still kicking.

HERE is one such picture:

(PICTURE REMOVED BY ME due to lack of taste pon such an ethical site [Razz] ) 12/4/02

NOT to look like a Retard like MOST that post on the forums.. BUT all you Ethical Shoot by the book guys, HOLIER THEN THOU, Quick to judge someones POST, Ropesucking , Stool pushing, Lama licking Whale humping, Tree huggers on the sites KILL ME !!!

Anyways, I'd sit here and Defend myself but I own my own site and have been surfing ALL the sites for 5 years and Know it's a waste of time.

Just like in your post to me, I hope I didn't offend you with mine !!!

Moosie,

Identifying the sex is required before the first shot, not the finisher. In fact even if he severely wounded the wrong sex an ethical hunter would finish the animal. Personally, I would have had my rifle, not my camera, in hand after I found blood.

Holier than thou? I've learned that what some call "self-righteousness" is usually just slob-speak for common decency.

You are obviously a capable hunter, but there is hunting and then there is sportsmanship.

As for the bestiality photo, why not start your own page with an age check and spare the minors that log on this forum the adult humor? Then you can be sure of your audience.

Oops, there I go being self-righteous again....

4 shots 3 hits one broken leg. Lobbing shots from 350ish yards away. Letting the poor fucker bleed for a while while filming before killing it with a neck shot.

I wonder did you bother to pack the meat out since you were alone? or did you leave a good chunk of it there to rot?

Did it make you horny watching it die after you used nearly as much ammo as alot of guys carry on it?

Asshole with no ethics at all shouldn't be allowed to even fish let alone hunt.

I hunted with the Moose man this year and was lucky to be with him when he killed his Montana Bull. You guys are reading too much into this if you think he is unethical. Go back and read his post again. It took an entire 2 seconds extra to take the video. From my experience hunting with him in Montana, he is as ethical as anyone. Sure, he likes to video as much of his hunt as he can, but it only takes him a few seconds to drop the camera and shoulder his rifle. A lot of you fat slobs would have given up tracking that elk if you didnt see any blood on the trail. Lobbing 350 yard shots? Like none of you guys would take a 350 yard shot at an elk with a 300 win mag. I bet a lot of you guys wouldnt even take that final neck shot knowing that animal would die in a few minutes anyway. Im guessing that you guys that are flaming Moosie dont have enough experience hunting elk to realize what you are talking about. Kind of like a couple of back-seat elk hunters.

Fat? I think not. I'm 22 spend 4 days a week in the gym and run the other 3 days a week. I'm a forest tech and spend every working day in the field covering ground that has never had a human foot print on it. In the winter I hike up to the wintering elk, deer and sheep herds to take pictures. I haven't gotten an Elk draw here yet, so no I havn't hunted elk first hand other than just going along with guys who do have the tags. In the spring I go out and collect elk and deer sheds. If you think you could even find my tracks in the bush let alone keep up I think you might be sadly mistaken.

Personnally I won't take a shot unless I know it will be a leathal one but if he is comfortable with shooting legs off thats his choice.

Moosie,
Do you have problems with your memory, just asking since you need all the camera photos, or maybe it is your ego going, since you need to show off all the pictures to your buddies, is that because of your unmoral deeds of the past in hunting. either way you don't need another tag.

THANX !!! Cool that I'm the opne that should watch what I post for kids and YOU guys use such language. TSK TSK. MAybe you guys really ARE better then me [Big Grin]

HEY, BTW, all pictures were taken from a digital camcorder and the pics were extracted from it. There is about 5 seconds of Video footage. When I seen him I dropped the Camcorder and Put a bullet right through his chest. He dropped instantly. I walked around the trees and had the camcorder up and he sat up again. I quickly went over and Put a final shot into him.

As for the pack out, I made one trip off the hill and made a few phone calls. Funny how most of us in "REAL" life have more friends that would leave work on a drop of a dime to help another out [Smile]

Anyways, Sorry I haven't been keeping up, I'll watch this thread a bit more Closely now that I know My FAN club base is Growing !!!!

Anyone that thinks a 350 yeard shot is far with a 300 win mag shouldn't be in the field, But then again, thats a different topic !!

ALSO, don't loose your cool when you post, You look sillier then me [Smile] And that takes a bunch.

OK, I'll take a lesson here, I would like to know the steps I took that were "UNETHICAL" and why I should never have another tag. Besides trying to be funny and teaseing a few here (Which aperently was a mistake [Wink] ) Let's revisit the hunting location and walk back through it.

Here is what I see.

1. I took a 350 yard shot.

I practice at the range and this isn't a hard shot if taken on a rest which I did. I've killed 1/2 dozen elk at this distance. MAybe the bedded shot is unethical ?!?! Kind of like a roosted Turkey ?

2. I found the location of the Elk that I shot and it's bed.

I followed through with the shot like every good hunter should do. I located the tree it was next to and quickly went over to the location.

3. I seen no evid of Blood or a hit altough I was pretty sure I had hit it. Fault me on this, But I've found friends deers that they were sure they've missed and after 1/2 hour looking under leaves a trail is found. In the snow I never had a hard time., but this time there was only 3 drops of blood the whole way. I followed the tracks untill I found it. Instead of BLAZING after it, I took my time in making sure there was a nice trail and that there was no blood in it.

Most people wait 1-2 hours before following game. It's actually ETHICAL to wait such a period untill following up on game that's wounded. LOOK at any Ethical hunting book and you know that. In that time, some aniamal are still hurting and suffering. BUT, That IS part of hunting and unfortunately we do what we can to minimize the pain caused by the game we seek. Why is it OK to leave a animal 1-2 hours in a bed dieing, But when I'm following it and finish it off shortly after I'm on it's trail it's wrong ?

4. After following it for awhile I seen it standing in the trees were I placed a shot in it quickly. It hit the ground. DEAD I thought. It didn't move.

The camcorder was still running. I picked it up and headed to the game I just shot.

5. As I aproached it, It put it's head up.

At this time I had the camcorder still on and took a "Still" off of the running film afterwards to show the story. Ethical or not in your eyes, Animals don't always die instantly. Even in a 20 yard shot. I quickly went over to kill it. Again I see no fault.

6. I took some pictures of it after it was dead.

I think Everyone does this. Notice I cleaned it up nice and the pictures are in good taste.

NOW, I am a learning guy, I'll be serious in this post for once to let the experts explain all my faults. Besides being a "TROLL" on the boards, And well known on it for Stirring crap, I do know how to hunt and Am Very successfull and ethical. I don't need to beat my chest on Sites like this to get a wooddy.

Anyways, I'll sit back and have you explain my wrong doings, reaslise that the time frames were very fast, and it wasn't like I set up for pictures with a "STILL" camera. I think thats what has you guys baffled. Besides my posting attitude [Wink]

If you want to call me names I can deal with that, I sleep VERY well with what I do in life, If you want to respond in a "TEACHING" manner too, I'm all ears and will love to hear what I did wrong. We're all trying to beter ourselves.

I see nothing wrong with moosies post/hunt what so ever.
I think what it boils down to is a bunch of lazy jizz lickers are jealous to see success.
If you want to be successful you have to get out of your truck, you have to walk further than just off the side of the road to piss out all the beer. [Roll Eyes] [Roll Eyes] [Roll Eyes]

Nice to see that the "Hunttalk.com" boys are spreading their holiday cheer is such a mature manner. . Some of these "gentlemen" actually have some nice trophies to their credit. But, to quote their favorite movie "Waterboy" 'de don't have some of the social skills'

Mousie, out of respect for this site, I deleted the link to yours. However, I will further comment that I believe that your habit of constantly attempted to "stir the pot" on the other boards is rather childish. I find your humor, or rather your crude attempt at it, to be in rather poor taste. As a western hunter, I can attest to the fact that your trophies that you have posted are quite representative of trophy caliber. "Greenhorn" has posted animals in the past that I would consider to be phenomenal. That aside, I just find your on-line persona abrasive. The various boards all have a tolerance level unique to each site. Your site goes to the extreme, but the members who choose to post their are both comfortable with it and find it to be "home". However, the "sport" that you and yours take in board surfing for the sole purpose of instigation leaves a lot to be desired, in my humble opinion. By the way, the Montana bull is quite a nice animal.

Come on Moosie the Grouch (like the play on words. Shows a little humor, no?) You are underestimating the power that you wield over your followers. You instigate, draw a little blood, and the sharks devour what's left. Isn't that the pattern? The sole purpose in some of the posts is for the effect. Would I have done anything different in the above elk hunt? No, I don't find anything that you did to be unethical. 350 yards with a .300 Win. Mag? Good rest, good bullets, seasoned shooter...no problem there. Videotaping the animal? Your explanation is sufficient justifaction, I have no problem with that. Luring board posters into arguments for the sole purpose of attack, no problem there...just kind of like shooting over bait. Just let the prey know that they are being pursued.

We don't care we actually get out and get the animals were after and have a good time doing it. You guys should grow up and listen to what these guys have to say...You might learn something.. Greenhorn, some just have different versions of "social skills". Would I laugh at elk camp if you made reference to an elk fetus? Yes, if it was funny. Would I find humor in posting pictures of it? No, not on a public forum. Would I sit in amazement looking at photos of YOUR elk trophies, yes I would. I just believe in adapting to the environment. What's PC on Moosie's wouldn't be PC in other areas. I have just found that it's pertinent to act accordingly in another's home. I would bet that you and Moosie and the others would be a blast to hang around with in a bar, I just wouldn't want you guys to visit at my Grandmother's house. [Big Grin]

I guess that I am over the hill at "35". But, I can use the excuse that I have five kids (spread out over several younger women [Wink] ), thus my need to "lecture".

And yes, I have visited your site on numerous occassions. I liken it to sneaking a look at Playboy when I was younger. Nice place to look at, I just try not to get caught in the act. [Wink]

Amendment,
Hell son I'm older than you [Big Grin] and there are a bunch at hunttalk older than me [Eek!]

Come on over and check out the sportsmans issues forum, there are folks that frequent that area that really know their chit.

Guess how I got "aquainted" with Moosie?
I was in the middle of a running mudfest over wolves or some such chit at monster mulies, moosie came on and flamed the hell out of me, I came back with both barrels blazing, finally after several volleys, I got a private message from another poster to go check out hunttalk, that the guy I was getting such a wad in my shorts about was just baiting me and that I should read between the lines, Damn I found out he really wasn't a 400 pound yuppie who drinks letays(spelling)? wears oakleys and never gets off his ATV, and only hunts high fence outfits. After that I joined at hunttalk and found that to be the best site on the net.

there have been hunts put together for members, I believe there is one in the planning right now.
members get together all the time, hunt together, party together, whatever it may be.
do you see that happening at other sites?

so expect the sharks if one of us, including "Springer", gets flamed somewhere else on the net. It isn't just moosie, you should have seen the responce for DS when he caught shit over his Ram. the support from the hunttalk family was amazing.

Don't believe anything these guys say. At Hunttalk, we don't like each other at all, but we're the dysfunctional family of the Internet and Moosie IS our Jerry Springer. We hate each other, but get off on high drama and hysterics. We just need a big fat bald bouncer.... anyone here fit that profile?

Non one there ever harvests any game - we just whack 'em and stack 'em, or, in the words of the Motor City Madman, kill 'em and grill 'em.

I'm fat and balding, does that count!!! [Big Grin]

I've been in the hills with Moosie and he's not the 'He-Man' that he says he is!!! [Wink] He even knows how to get out of the woods.

Nice elk Moosie!
Save your breath when the "perfect, double-rifle-hunting-purist and ultra-ethical" guys chime in...they get REAL pissy when a normal guy invades the sandbox.
