October 12, 1942: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard are here from San Francisco. Mr. Howard contemplated hunting, but may not see his plans through because of the storm. They now own the Hunter and Banks ranch, west of Elko. He is nationally known as the owner of outstanding race horses, being the owner of Sea Biscuit.

October 13, 1942:
The Nevada Fish and Game Commission today announced that 513 bucks and 104 does have been killed during the first 10 days of the deer season throughout Nevada.

October 10, 1967: Four of 78 resident bighorn sheep tags and one of thirty Elk tags were drawn by Elko County hunters this year. Applications for the resident big horn sheep tags numbered 454, making the odds about six to one against drawing. For the elk tags, 667 applications were received making the odds 22 to one against drawing. Even higher odds occurred on the nonresident bighorn tags. For the seven tags available, 177 nonresidents from 32 states, Canada, and Austria applied. That put the odds at more than 25 to one against drawing. These seven tags went to hunters from Nebraska, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas and California.

Wow, can you imagine only 667 elk applications? I wonder what it is today...

Much of the Owayhe desert of Idaho runs into Nv. around Jackpot, and in the last two or three years that has become an elk corocopia of monster bulls the likes of which we have never seen..This year its the talk of the Twin Falls area and units 55, 54, 46, 40, 42 and a couple of others. All of which border Nv. 5 or 6 years ago, these units have precious few if any elk. I took my grandson in law on his hunt in unit 54 for a buck deer, we saw 60 elk in one bunch and 40 in another bunch, from the pickup. Its a hard to draw to hunt for deer or elk.

I can remember that 50 years ago, there were few if any deer in this part of Texas, and No Feral Hogs.

Even the rocks don't last forever.
