you can't learn to"speak elk" over night. compare it to learning to speak a 2nd language, you would be doing more damage than good w/o knowledge of what to say and when to say it.the cow call is the best bet and only use it with your guides direction,i'm not talking down to you please don't misunderstand the advice.practice your shooting and commit to memory your ranges and trajectories and leave the conversationial elk talk to your "interpeter" have a great hunt and the best of luck to you!

Ever been in a blind with a guy that decided he would "practice" his duck calling for the first time? You know the experience. If your guided, let him earn his money. If your alone call me. I've been calling Elk for years and I may not be able to teach you in short order but can recommend calls that work...and those that won't. Sometimes getting a bull in requires no calling, but replicating sounds another bull makes by scraping and rubbing. They have a vocabulary that is large. The Hoochie Mamma that wapiti7 recommended is truly fool proof, but knowing when to call and when not to is very important. Everybody has covered it here in that elk calling takes time to learn... Without a doubt you are paying a guide good money so he should be the one doing any calling ... Ken.... If you're going in Oct, probably the biggest part of the bugling is over. I have heard them bugle clear to the 20th or so, but it is unusual. Most bugling seasons start around Sept 15th, depending on the area. A shot not taken is always a miss

There is a species of bird that sounds like a cow call. Anybody know what the name of it is? We call it that #*&^ing Elk Bird. Just realize that they are out there and then try to learn the difference.
