hey guys, probably a gross question, but am wondering how many days you wear your long johns while out hunting?

I'm going to utah, for 10 days, we're staying in a house so I'm only planning three days clothes and will wash every third day. problem is I'm told it can be COLD, and I only have one pair of long john bottom, patagonia (the top fit 40lbs ago, no more).

so I need to buy some good ones, but they seem pricey. I don't generally wear underwear UNDER my underwear, but maybe that is a route? I don't want to buy three pairs but guess I'd need to wash them every night?? (depending on weather and need of course).

I'm not familiar with patagonia but I use helly hansen long underwear. I have two pairs and can alternate while I wash them but realistically they dry overnight in a warm spot anyways. I was at costco recently and noticed they have some kind of underwear that looks suspiciously similar to the HH underwear at a fraction of the cost.

Many days If there is no easy way to wash them or carry extras.

What kind of hunting are you doing?

Are you ridding an ATV out to a blind or tree-stand and sitting all day or are you hiking up and down mountains all day?

You should have at least two sets. If you are hunting out of a house then wash one set whenever/as often as you need to keep from feeling funky. If you are in a small camp or going into remote areas then carry the second set in your rucksack/pack in case you get wet. Always wear regular underwear under your long-johns. Anytime you are going into the cold wear your clothes in several layers. A thin set of poly-pro under a medium set of poly-pro is usually warmer than wearing one thick set and easier to move around in.

The "standard" packing list my co-workers and I used for many years called for five pairs of socks, five pairs of underwear, and two sets of long-johns. If we were going way up north or high up in the mountains where it gets really cold then we carried two sets of light, two sets of medium, and one set of heavy, fluffy long-johns that had a matching hood and booties you wear in a sleeping bag. We would wear the above listed items for as long as we had to before washing. That could be a couple of days or it could be a couple of months.

I'm expecting to do mostly sitting, as I'm not in fantastic shape and although I can do some miles some injuries I have don't react so well (but pain is small price for success, and temporary, so will do whatever I need to).

I usually layer long john's and then jeans and upper body an a-frame (wifebeater here in CA), t-shirt, overshirts, then jacket. One thing I'm considering purchasing is some sort of pants that aren't jeans. I don't like too many pockets, but some of the ones I see that have the cargo pockets on the side look pretty good. I even thought about some of those lined pants.

I'll look at a light base and a medium over that Grenadier, good idea. I'm trying to do this on the cheap if possible. Times are tight and between tags, lodging, food, gas (projected) I'm already 800+ small price for a good hunt I guess, but don't want to go crazy. I have a tendency to go crazy.

I have the heavy socks, I'd like another set of thin "sock liners" but not necessary, I have boots. I also am taking some "powder pants" just thin synthetics I wear over my pants if I'm in snow to keep them dry. I am taking a pair of sorrels too in case of snow.

I do about 3 10 day hunts up here in AK out of a backpack every year. I take 2-3 pairs of underware, 3-4 extra pair of socks and extra thermal top to sleep in. Otherwise I wear the same thing every day. If I get really dirty/bloody, I'll rinse out my cloths in a stream and wear my rain gear while its drying.

After about 3 days of not showering it really doesn't matter one way or another.

Old timers used to put them on at the first snow, and take them off when the streams thawed out.

I wear long johns all winter every day. just wear your regular underwear under the long stuff and change them as you seem fit. Its nice to have two pairs but unless you have a accident the regular underwear will take most of the smell. I buy silk long johns from cabelas they are pricey but in opionion they are worth every penny.

This really is a funny question.

I recently was talking to a friend who was in Canada when a lumberjack had some kind of bad accident and was brought in to the hospital. They removed his clothes, pants to find his long johns had been on so long that his leg hair was actually growing through the fabric.

I guess it was quite a chore to get them off.

If I'm hunting in snow I wear wool pants NOT jeans. The wool is much better at insulating, keeps you warm even if wet and the snow brushes right off and doesn't stick (and melt) and they are much quieter than jeans. Go to you local surplus store, they usually have some army surplus wool pants for a decent price.

If you have to ask on a forum when to change your underwear what are you gonna do when confronted with a difficult problem!

Bring a small container of liquid laundry detergent and wash what you have in the bathroom sink as needed. Squeeze out as much water as you can and put in front of a fan or warm source so they are dry by morning.

A friend of mine is a guide on Everest and other 8,000 meter peaks. He says at the end of an Everest climb (30 days without a shower) you unzip your wind pants and just cut the down underwear off - it is not only rank, but pretty brown as well.

i have gone 14 days in good mireno wool long johns a few time camping in the fall i take them off at night and let them air out . for me the synthetic lohn johns only last about 3 days before they get rank. I never use any cotten clothing in cold weather if you get wet your done for.

Hell, if you're staying in a house with indoor plumbing, just bring a couple of trunks and change every day. Plus bathe and dress for dinner. (tie optional since you're "roughing" it)

No kidding! HA! It came out so cheap for the house we decided why not. I have nothing against roughing it per se, but not if it isn't a necessary thing. (there's no brownie points for being uncomfortable)

Snell difficult problems are easy, I want to make sure I have clean underwear on when confronted with them!

I've never been on a hunt in cold weather longer than a few days, and since I need to buy stuff, spend money, I don't want to do more than I need to.

I've got a cart full right now, light/mid weight bottom x 1 (I have one already that still fits) light/mid top x 2, insulated pants x 1, blaze orange vest and hat, suspenders (my pony keg pushes my pants down in conjunction with my day pack pushing the back down).

I appreciate all the advice gents. I hit checkout on this and I only have a couple things left to be ready for 8 days of hunting.
