I would guess it is a 250# female.

220 is my guess, assuming those are standard plastic trash cans. KG ______________________ Hunting: I'd kill to participate.

I am guessing the cans are 30 gallon plastic. Bear appears to be female and would probably go 230 to 240 lbs. Free men should not be subjected to permits, paperwork and taxation in order to carry any firearm. NRA Benefactor

250 sounds about right...I could make it 250lbs +300grains pretty quick for making me more work.

How are you guys figgerin that it is a sow? She/he made one helluva mess last night. Spent 45 minutes working over that trash.

Well by looking at the picture before I saw everybody's post I figured it was under 250 pounds and female by the posture and head although I'd like to see it moving around before I definitely said sow but pretty sure I'm right. Nice one about making it 300 grains heavier! I was thinking more like letting the air out through a .308" diameter opening.

I figured the bear at 250 at first glance. Then I read the posts. Seems as though we are all estimating in the same limited range. Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns

Best way to check is to run up behind her, index and bird finger spread and extended, if both go in it's a sow, if only one goes in, it's a boar!

I am going to guess 160 to 180 pounds. It looks like a young bear to me, the head and neck look cubby. ~Ann ![]()

I'm gonna go along with Ann. This time of year they will "hair up" quite a bit. Also, as best I could see, the ears look pretty big compared to the head.

At this link you will see a very heavy bear in comparison. Look at its head, neck and body: Big Boy Now compare it with the bear on this forum. BIG difference, the bear here is quite small yet. ~Ann ![]()

Factors indicating female: 1. Standing on flat ground, the line of the back slopes down from backside to shoulders. 2. Comparing size and mass of front shoulder to butt. Females (bears only of course) have smaller mass in the front shoulders when compared to their butt. To sum up: Big butt sloping down to smaller front shoulders usually indicates female (bear).

Even a female that the hips stand higher than a 40 gal garbage can, is going the weigh in at more than 180 lbs, IMO! I believe the bulk of the posters have it pritty close at 200-250 lbs! The average black bear will run around 150 lbs, but that bear is not average, IMO! Young, but well fed on garbage, she's fat, and slick. It is harder to judge female bears, because their heads, even on a very large female, are not blocky like a large male. In any event, she better not come to my bait, without cubs! ..................... ![]() ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith ![]()
