If you could not use a Partiton OR a Trophy Bonded Bear Claw for a particular hunting application of your choice, what would be your backup choice in bullets? This is for any game of your choice...deer, elk, bear, moose...you name it.

I don't use Partition or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. My first choice is Barnes bullets, I might if I could not get Barnes bullets go with the Partition or Trophy Bonded Bear Claw's as a back up bullet. I just like Barnes bullets.

I am also with Redhawk--- my first choice is also Barnes. I would use Woodleigh if the Barnes were not available.

For the heavier game where I would have used either of those in the first place, I'd be happy with a Fail Safe. For lighter game (deer, black bear) I've always had good success with Hornady SSTs and the Interbonds.

Depending on the task at hand I would probably try working a load up with a heavy for caliber bonded bullet, i.e. for the 30-06 200 gr Accubond or the 180 gr Failsafe.

For thin skin and non-dangerous game, use a 338 Win Mag with a Core-Lokt and lung shoot it. For the rest, shoot the biggest caliber you can with a Barnes-X.

For deer, I would (and do) use Sierra Game Kings and they work extremely well for me.

I would use North Fork, Winchester Fail-Safe, Woodleigh, or else Swift A-Frame bullets. The Fail-Safe is one of the best bullets I've ever used, and I've killed a lot of game with it, from B.C to Tanzania.

You like it better than Barnes I guess? Ever tried the TSX? How does the Failsafe leave your custom bores? Do they leave a residue that is harder to clean? I have some here that I never loaded because I was afraid of what it would take to clean the bore.

If I couldn't get the Nosler I'd use the Hornady. I think they work about the same anyway and I shoot Hornady most!! sofa

Just wondering..does Remington still make the corelokt or does Hornady make these bullets for Remington?

I don't think Hornady ever made the corelokt for Rem.

That could be true Doc. I thought someone mentioned awhile back that Hornady and the corelokt was the same bullet now.

I figured Remington made the old core lokts they may still make them..

Actually, Hornady has made MANY of the "core-locks". Hornady has made bullets for EACH AND EVERY BHULLET MANUFACTURER IN NORTH AMERICA!

Really? Where are your sources? I never knew that. I've only heard of Hornady making the new Accuptip.

So, Hornady has made the corelokt. What other bullets have they made for other manufacturers? Do those others also brand the bullets as their own?

Doc ----- For the standard rifles I will use the most accurate bullet in my rifle and choose from all of them, from Hornady to Sierra to Speer to Remington and Winchester. For my Magnums once again I will use as my bullet of first choice the one that will shoot the best in my rifle. My list starts at North Fork, then followed by Nosler Partition-Partition Gold, Barnes X-XLC-TSX, Swift A-Frame. The accuracy of the North Forks are amazing, and it is the only bullet that is as tough as the Barnes in my opinion. While they are expensive they are reasonable when compared to the GS and other speciality bullets and are consistently available. wave Good shooting.

Nosler Accubonds. Thats what I use and I think they are better than Partitions from what I have seen and tested. For the big stuff over in Africa I would use the Accubond on Black Death and animals that size or smaller. Anything bigger I would go with Swifts or solids of some kind.

I haven't tried TSXs yet, but I'll get around to it sooner or later.

I don't like regular Barnes X bullets because the OAL is longer than I'd like it to be, and they've copper fouled the barrel of every rifle I've fired them in very badly.

Fail-Safes have been very easy on barrels in my experience, don't leave residues that are particularly hard to clean, and they don't copper-foul nearly as much as some other bullets. I like the lead core in the base very much, since it reduces OAL significantly, and the steel cup and cap arrangement effectively keeps the lead core from being deformed or displaced. The rest of the bullet acts like a Barnes-X.........

LOL Allen, as usual, I agree. I find the FS to be more consistant and generally easier to load for than the TSX. I've not given up on the TSX yet by any means, but the FS has shot well and been "non-fussy" (technical term) in every rifle I've tried them in... oh yeah, they work well on game too!

What gun are you loading for? Also there is a big difference between deer and heavier animals. Match the bullet to the game or......

Any gun! It is a general question...like I said in the first post. Just pick your rifle that you may normally use a partition in and name what you'd use in leiu of.

They make Partitions in every caliber that I hunt big game with!

For a long time there were no Partitions for the .375 but then they made them again and I have boxes of them.

Where is this topic going? Am I supposed to pick a bullet for brown bear at 100 yds and use it on whitetails at 300 yds? Ok then. I will use my 375 with the 300 gr Partitions on everything. Wink

I shoot NPs for everything but my .404. So I would switch to The NorthFork, then NAB, then Swift. Woodleigh makes a great bullet too, but many are not very BC.

The Barnes TSX. I've had great success with Barnes X bullets and I've found the TSX easy to work with. It's a great bullet.

Barnes TSX. IMHO, it's the best expanding bullet ever designed; tough, accurate and easy to load. Next I would probably go with a Swift A-Frame. The absolute last on my list would be the Hornady Interbond.

If you were to use these instead of a partition, then why bother loading the partition to begin with?

for deer, antelope, mountain goats or bighorn sheep, i would never bother loading partitions to begin with. none of these animals require a partition. i would never eat a bear unless i knew that it had been eating only berries all its life, and since i suppose that this can't be guaranteed, i have no reason to hunt bear.

if i was going to go moose hunting, and probably elk as well, the 165 (.308) or 160 (7x57) partition would be my first choice for my rifles. i would do this, not because it is necessary, but because that is what we're "supposed" to do, according to all we see and hear on these forums. the fact of the matter is, however, that people were doing a great job of hunting and killing moose and elk long before nosler came around, and the partition is not "necessary.".

your question assumes that these bullets are not available anyway, so in that case, i would be real about the situation and simply go with these standard bullets, which are more than adequate for my rifles. while the above weights in a "vanilla" bullet would be just fine, the 180-grain for .308 and the 175 grain for 7x57 would give penetration and expansion on the same level as the partition which would be more than enough for big game.

The Swift A-Frame's have worked well for me in 308, 338, 375 and 416. I don't necessarily think they are better than any other premium bullet but I've had very good luck with them. In my opinion though nothing has really come along that makes the Nosler Partition obsolete.

Mark

Would either go to the accubond or sierra. Who would stop me from using a partition? Any type of Barnes would require me to stop hunting.

Wow, don't like em huh? I even use them in my muzzleloader. The thread header is not meant to imply by any means someone is stopping you from using the ever faithful and reliable partition, just wanted to know what bullets out there folks would use if they had to choose another bullet as a runner up.

Yep. You're right. The partition's history is sound. In terms of price, it is a cheap and accurate bullet and does the job.
