Hi All

Just wondering if there is any Texas public land where one might find an aoudad or blackbuck?? I have been pouring over the maps on the F&G website and they look good but it is difficult to find info if there are exotics available on any reserves with an over-the-counter permit.

Thanks for all your help!! even if negative!!

Matt

The amount of public land in Texas is miniscule. Most of it is in State Parks which are generally off limits to hunting, although some limited population control hunting for deer and hogs is sometimes available.

While mouflon certainly do range over some non-park tracts of state land in far West Texas, access to those tracts is typically unavailable due to being "landlocked" by private land.

The few public places where big game hunting is allowed like the Black Gap refuge are limited entry by lottery and are usually oversubscribed.

If looking or a hunt for blackbuck or mouflon, the best bet is to simply pay a trespass fee ("lease fee") to a landowner. The fee for either species is usually not unreasonable.

Most blackbuck hunting is found in Central Texas (the Hill Country), while mouflon are found in the Trans Pecos and a few places in the Panhandle. Hunting both in one trip to Texas would require a lot of time and travel. There may be a few "game ranches" in Central Texas which have both, but the sheep found on most game ranches are not mouflon (Aoudad), but rather semi-exotics which are bred from domestic sheep to have large, curling horns.

About how much would someone pay as a lease fee to hunt blackbuck or mouflon?

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

The one and only place I have seen for true open to the public hunting of mouflon and Aoudad (bow only) is Amistad Lake (Federal Land). I have personally seen both sheep on the banks in the hunting areas while fishing. The National Park website has a hunting link with info and very very low harvest rates.

As for blackbuck, you will be paying whatever the market rate may be for the size of trophy you take. Exotics in Texas are most land owners rainy day/mad money funds.

Aoudad (Barbary Sheep) are found near Amarillo in the Palo Dura Canyon. I'm told it's about as much fun as hunting Ibex in one of the jerkastans....rough. Texas is jammed with private game ranches. Some want extreme coin for even the most common of exotics. Others are fair priced. You might ask Wendell Reich. He has a private ranch and knows more about the field.

Just to clear things up a bit, like LDK pointed out, Mouflon are not Aoudads.

I do know of one low-fenced ranch near Uvalde, Texas that has free-range blackbucks and aoudads. PM me if you are interested and I will put you in touch with them.
