Just wondering out loud, why do we choose the chamberings we do in those "5 rifle battery" threads? Seems to me we perhaps should choose our poison for a specific purpose. What would be your prefered rig for these particular animals? Feel free to elaborate on the situation or loads. Name as many or as few guns as you like.

A- Coyotes

B- Speedgoat

C- Black Bear

d- Western states Mule Deer

E- eastern woods whitetail

F- Elk

G- Moose

H- Bison

For me it would go something like;

A- 223

B- 257 AI

C- 300 savage, (using dogs, open sights, 180 gn Hornadys).

D- 257 AI, 260 Rem or 280 Rem. Doesnt matter.

E- Same as c without the dogs.

F- 35 Whelen, 225 gn BT or 30-06 180 gn Accubond.

G- 35 Whelen, 225 gn BT

H- 35 Whelen, 250 gn Hornady

IMO the ideal for them is as folows
Coyotes............25-06
speedgoat..........25-06
black bear.........270 Win
mule deer..........270 Win
whitetail..........6.5 X 55
elk................30-06
moose..............30-06
bison..............338-06

Sadly the .30-06 will do it all and it's a darn poor choice for that reason.....it makes it difficult to justify other guns when you own one. This is also true of the .280 Rem....bad choice for a first gun.

A. Bobcat/Foxes- 17 Remington

B. Coyotes- 22-250

C. Black Bear- 338 RUM

D. Western States Mule Deer- 270 AI

E. Eastern Wood Whitetail- 270 AI

F. Elk- 338 RUM

G. Moose- 338 RUM

H- Bison- 338 RUM

The lil 17 Rem is in a CZ527 Varmint shooting 25g berger HP's for hide damage control.
The 22-250 is a Rem 700 VS shooting 50g Speer MHP's
The 270AI is in a Pre 64 Winny shooting 140g TSX's
Still playin with the 338 RUM, it is a Rem 700 XCR with a Knoxx's compstock on it. Bullet will either be the 225 accubond, 225 TSX, 250 TSX, or the 250 Sierra SBT. Which ever shoots better when load development is done.

I guess I could just use my .338-06 for whitetail, and get rid of a bunch of rifles. That'll never happen. Or I could use my .220 for speedgoats(no legal), the 7x57 for mulies, whitetail and elk, and the .375 for the rest. Or...

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Good follow up to the 5 gun battery thread.

prairie dogs-Cooper varmint weight 22-250

whistle pigs in the high country, coyotes-Kimber Montana .243 shooting 58 gr v-max's, fast

deer, elk, sheep, 'yotes, more whistle pigs-Kimber Classic .300 WSM shooting 168 TSX's

elk, griz, yet more ground hogs or anything else needing a stomping at longer ranges-custom Remmy .358 STA shooting 250-280 gr. Swift A-Frames or Northforks

moose, brown bear, yes, it will take on ground hogs this summer, anything needing a real stomping at shorter ranges-Remmy custom shop .458 Win mag shooting 400 gr. Northforks.

Crap, where do the Kimber Montana .338 Win mag and the Remmy AWR 7mm Rem mag, neither of which I have, yet, fit? Guess I'll have to invent something.

A-223 Remington

B-257 Roberts

C-Over bait or spring SE AK-257 Roberts. Spot and stalk 30-06 Spr.

D-257 Roberts

E-30-06 Spr. with 200gr NP, I would be fine with the Roberts here too.

F-375 H&H

G-375 H&H

H-458 WM

Kind of a short list of critters to squeeze the five guns in, but the above uses the five I listed in the thread mentioned, I could do them all with the "06" though.....I'd rather have 5 guns!

338 win mag for all of them.I shot my first coyote two years ago with my 338 win mag.I have shot 84 deer whitetails with 84 shots with my 338 win mag and one black bear.I think Kodiaks is where I draw the 416 rem mam line.Buffalos can be very tough if they are truely wild.We had a buffalo hall of pictures there were lots shot with 375 H&H and 458 win mags that took alot more than one shot.

B. .257 Roberts or .25-06
C. .30-30 or .308 carbine with hounds, spot and stalk- .257,.25-06, '06, 7mmRM doesn't matter, choose by mood.

E. .308 carbine in the thick, .257 or .25-06
F. .338 Win Mag
G. 7mmRM or .338WM
