I hunted this deer on a friends ranch, one I used to hunt back in college. He had a spot open on his lease so I took it.

A few others on the lease were very limited on the number of times they could visit, so I gave them first choice of areas to hunt. I took the "leftover areas". Plus, I knew the 10,000 acre ranch a lot better than they did, and I knew I could find a productive spot.

I drove the 4 wheeler around to a remote canyon overlooking the river.

No feeder, no blind, nuthin'.

Shortly after sunset, the deer started moving.

This guy "appeared" about 100 yards away, as Whitetail are prone to do.

The 30-06 spoke and he was down. 180 Nosler Partition does the job, again.

While the shot was probably under 100 yards, it was made from teh top of a 30' cliff so I had to drive a little over 5 miles just to retreive him. So I am telling people I shot him from about 5 miles away. Big Grin

Grrrr...I knew there was a reason I didn't like you Wendell. Jealously is such an ugly word...LoL

Very nice deer.

Legistine actu? Quid scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Nice buck! He looks kind of beat up too. Is there evidence that he's been fighting?

That's the best buck I've ever seen taken at 5 miles, Wendell! Big Grin I do, however, know a guy who claims the '06 shoots within 4" of point of aim at a mile! dancing

Good hunting,

If you are talking about the wound seen in the first picture, that was the shot. I was actually shooting him from above and that was the correct angle for the shot.

Not too many broken tines, just a little G5 that was chipped off and a kicker missing. He had 4 other small 1" non-typical points not visible in the picture.

Wendell-

Congrats on taking a terrific buck. thumb

I'm sure you'll find a place of prominence on the wall for this old warrior.

Nice going! And hey, that's not bad shooting for 5 miles... Wink

Wendell, that is a beauty. What did he weigh?
I've been culling does and yearlings in VA and I'll bet he outweighs all five of the deer I've killed this year put together.

When I walked up to him, I was a bit shocked at the body size. He was relatively small compared to what I am used to.

He field dressed exactly 125 lbs.

I can judge Whitetail pretty well and this one fooled me. This was at the end of the rut. I think he is only a 4.5 yr. old deer. A mature (pre-rut) deer here weighs 215-250.

This obviously made the rack look quite a bit bigger than what I had expected.

However, I am very happy with the deer. I believe I would not do it any different if I had it to do over. thumb

And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. They will see sunrises and sunsets such as you cannot imagine, and a land and a way of life that is fast vanishing. And always he will will tell you how he plans to go back. (author: David Petzer)

Good on ya Wendell. When they are smaller bodied they can fool you pretty easy. He looks looong. Very nice mass it appears, with a bit of palmation too, I would have thought he was a bit older as well in the twilight without having seen a few to 'size him up' against.

Handsome rack to me!

Congrats, sounds like it was a nice trip!
