As I type this, I look at a sagebrush landscape totaly devoid of any antelope.. and driveing to town yesterday, saw NONE! Met a rancher in town at the grocery store, and he noticed the same thing.. one small herd on his place has no fawns only adult does.. what gives.. Wolves? I know the BLM has shut down everything west of Hwy 189 to any motorized vehicle traffic all winter (makes coyote hunting almost impossible).. I used to do my share here west of the house..but I can't walk that far.. anyone have an idea?? Les

Several factors have contributed to major pronghorn population dives here in MT. We had a major winterkill...the likes of which have not been seen ever before. Also MT is having a bout of disease problems, mostly EHD. I'm not sure how much it affects antelope but one rancher has found at least 4 dead, seemingly healthy antelope near waterholes in the past two weeks. Populations counts indicate numbers lower than that of the 50s.

I would venture to say it was winter that did your antelope in. I plan on eating my archery tag this year.

Sounds like you must live somewhere between Farson and Pinedale...I'm going to hunt near there next week. It's not clear to me how much of this is natural and how much has to do with coal-bed methane, but there seems to have been a marked decrease in population over the last 20 years.

I'll take winter kill over wolves any day. The wolves are decimating our wildlife at an alarming rate. Some areas are now void of Elk. All the other game is suffering too, as well as livestock ranchers.

Could just be a regional thing. We have them in town. Antelope numbers are up here. The cemetary has about 15 in it every day as well as farm fields right on the egde of town. My neighbor shot a nice buck that green scored right aT 83 inches less than a mile from town.

A 10-mile-long goat fence? Is that legal where there are migration routes?

Some university trained idiot has it figured out that the migrations will funnel thru four or five underpasses .. how long do you think it will take antelope and deer to find 'em?? this bright idea brought to you by the same buttholes that planted wolves...

I dunno, not so fond of the idea of goat fences anyway. I'll be in Pinedale next week for a couple of breakfasts across from the KOA and the winter's barbecue meat.

The Pinedale Campground changed owners not long ago, did they make many changes to the campground itself? It would be nice if the meat cutter re-opened, it's a long haul to Green River to get them cut/wrapped/frozen for the trip back.

Hi Les

We've been taking them to Henderson's in Green River, seems to be a good bunch. The now-IGA in Big Piney used to do them but quit when it became IGA; it was handy enough and we'd stop off at Gatzky's Grubhouse on the way back.

I'll be in Pinedale by Wednesday, supposed to meet up with my hunting partner for ice cream at Farson and go to the store in Pinedale for fresh eats. I'm not sure how to send a PM, but will do so when I figure it 're out.

Les, they are dead.

A disease called Blue Tongue ravaged the herds. It causes their tongues to swell up until they are unable to eat.

Les, I usually hunt area's 47 and 48, around the Medicine Bow, Shirley Basin Area. About two years ago, those herds were virtually wiped out by it, at least, that's what the game warden said. Numbers in that area are still way down. Glad to hear the western herds are still holding up.

Antelope Sniper: Just met Tom and his bud in Pinedale for breakfast. there's a nice buck now hanging out in my lower pasture. saw him on the way back from town.. No doubt about it, the late spring/winter here in these parts have cut the numbers way down.. they should make a rebound in the next year or two.. Les

Y'all

We saw somewhat fewer antelope this year than last, heard a couple of the local theories about why. We shot one apiece for the freezer and were happy to get them.

I was in Harrison, Nebraska over Labor day.

There were so many antelope on the Nebraska/Wyoming state line I couldn't believe it. So many that I wanted to see what an out of state tag would have cost.

I think non-residents can only bow hunt for antelope in Nebraska.

Thanks!

Nebraska can be tough.
Parts of Wyoming may still have over the counter doe tags. They usually run about $45.00 for non-residents.

One thing I have noticed is they are traveling a lot. Several pastures one side or the other instead of just one or two pastures in the middle. Go get them oversized dogs for sure. Best of luck with that.
