The Remington Model 720 was the final commercial version of the M1917 Enfield. Remington produced their Model 30 in the 20's and 30's which was basically a sporterized military action. The Model 720 intoduced in 1941 was much more refined...a real beauty. Only about 2700 made.

I'm partial to the Enfield as it was the first centerfire rifle I ever fired. (That was my Grandfather's sporterized M1917. He was a WWI vet and swore by the Enfield. I still have that gun.)

What I didn't know until the May 2001 issue of American Rifleman came out was that the US Navy bought all remaining 30-'06 Model 720s (about 1000) at the start of WWII as a substitute for the military rifles that were in short supply. Since the early 60's they've been awarded as Secretary of the Navy Trophy Rifles.

I'm going again.

This time simply for the NorthEastern USA.

I need a trusty "Win M94 in 356 Win". Peep sight for walking and puhing deer in the dense woods. Quick rifle. Ok, I could go with a 45-70 Marlin or a number of others, but everyone has one of those.

That "Browning BLR in 30-06" could serve the same purpose and double for a longer range yard gun if need be, but what fun would having one rifle be?

Then we need a flat gun. To take care of our 'chuck problem on that same farm. A "Winchester M70 Coyote" in 243Win with Leupold quick detach rings and a 2-7 for deer hnting, and a 6.5-20 for 'chucks and 'yotes would be a ticket. I'll hone the trigger.

Then we might as well throw a 30-06 witha 3-9 on our rack. Because.....well because, everyone should have a caliber that had done it all for more years than most calibers have existed, and I think the -06 would fit that bill. We could go with any manufacturer, but Tikka, of SAKO/Beretta fame, is selling stainless whitetail hunters for around 520. They have adjustable triggers, and are stainless, and mine shoots so well out of the box, there was no sense in me bedding the rifle.

And for a lazy winter afternoon, with some sunshine, sitting in a tree stand perhaps, or on a log in the woods with a spot to help me steady my rifle, it would be cool to throw a 45-70 in the mix. I'll take a Ruger #1 with a 1.5-5 scope. Lord knows that big slug doesn't let them go far with decent shot placement. So, it is a "lazy man's gun", for there will be very little tracking, if any.

I have a few guns that I want and maybe I need.

1. Browning Stainless Stalker in 300 WSM. (What do I need with that, I already have a 270 Win Abolt and a M700 Sendero SSF in 7mm STW.)

2. A new Light Varmint benchrest rifle (Panda action, R&M stock, Kreiger bbl.)

3. A new Heavy Varmint benchrest rifle (Same components as above with a cruiser weight bbl.)

4. A new Young or SGY railgun.

This is a little different than the usual replies.

About 90 that I already own, but only need about three!

Actually, if I could have anything I want, it would be six rifles, and one Merkel shotgun/rifle combo 12ga 22lr. the rifles would be: a 243, 300 Win Mag, and a 416 Rem all Mod 70s by D'Arcy Ecols,(spl) and a 240 Apex, and 375 flanged,a 500 NE 3" all in matching Westley Richards, best grade, double rifles. If I had that I could get rid of everything else, and live just fine!
