https://www.wyff4.com/article/...so-arrested/22717258 Bear hunters charged after firing at deputies, authorities say; father of one also arrested Hunter Wright, James Owen face multiple charges Updated: 4:43 PM EDT Aug 13, 2018 Carla Field HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. — Two Henderson County men who were bear hunting are facing charges after firing at deputies and resisting arrest, according to deputies. Deputies were called about 8 p.m. Saturday to the South Mills River Road about someone firing a gun from a truck. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission was also contacted due to a history of wildlife poaching in that area. The North Carolina mountain season dates for legal bear hunting are Oct. 15 to Nov. 17 and Dec. 10, 2018 to Jan. 1, 2019, with some additional game land restrictions. Henderson County deputies located an unoccupied vehicle behind the building. Deputies said while they were looking for the occupants of the vehicle, shots were fired at them from the woods. After deputies ordered the shooters to come out, Hunter Alan Wright, 22 of Etowah, and James Bradley Owen, 21 of Horse Shoe, came out of the woods. Deputies said Wright was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with misdemeanor resisting and delaying or obstructing a public officer. Deputies said Owen refused to comply with deputies’ commands and he got into an altercation with deputies during his arrest. Owen is charged with felony first-degree attempted murder, felony assault on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor resisting, delaying or obstructing a government official. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission also charged Owen with a misdemeanor for using processed food products as bait for black bears and discharging a firearm from the right-of-way of a state road. Deputies said Owen’s father, James Gary Owen, 49, showed up at the scene and was also arrested with misdemeanor resisting a public officer Wright was released from the Henderson County Jail on a $500 bond. Owen remains in the Henderson County Jail with bond set at $100,500. His father was released on $400 bond. Once again, the media calls them hunters when they were actually poachers.

It might be interesting to know "the rest of the story" with respect to: Were they trespassing when in the woods? Had they actually killed any animals? Were they under the influence of alcohol or drugs? Were they wanted for other illegal activities? Did they have a poaching history? And just for me, are they retarded or just plain stupid for firing guns at officers? I wonder if they were pure poachers who never hunted legally or if they were often legal hunters who also poached on the side.

Based on the time they were doing this, my guess they were poachers that had not hunted legally. From my experiences, hunters that normally hunt LEGALLY, poach at times where unless caught in the act, their kill can be/could be passed off as a legal kill and they would get away with it. Sounds to me like these guys were Appalachian White Trash. I bet they were also cooking and distributing meth or heroin. Like posted above they were criminals not hunters.
