My friend Andy told me that a Pronghorn was high on his bucket list. I told him I was headed to NM to do just that and he quickly decided to join me. Opening morning found us glassing over more quality bucks than I'd ever seen in one place. He was mainly interested in taking a good representative and although he could have held out for a better buck, he took one look at this guy and decided it had everything he was looking for: mass, deep heart shaped hooks and good prongs. The fact that the prongs jutted outward 45 degrees, made him even better. Nice buck Andy!

I spent all day passing on marginal B&C bucks and by sundown had decided tomorrow would be another day. While heading back to the lodge, we spotted this buck high on a ridge, where we had seen Elk that morning. Quickly deciding he had a very high set of horns, we bailed out of the truck and closed the half mile as fast as we could without running. By the time we made it up the ridge, using juniper and deep creek beds for cover, the sun was sitting on top of the tree line. It was difficult to judge him with the setting sun behind him so I ranged him at 259 yards. There was no available cover between us so I suggested we start walking straight for him. That lasted all of 25 yards before he sprinted down into a deep ravine. We pursued trying to cut him off. He emerged above us and I quickly sat down on a large rock, set up my short sticks and laid my heavy .223 VS model 700 in the yoke. Matt ranged him at 320 yards. He was broadside looking at us. Something about Pronghorns; I love hunting them. I threw "record book head" thinking out the window and dropped him in his tracks. The Nosler 60 grain partition did its job well. Not my best buck by far, but a unique buck with a tall set of horns with small sticker points scattered about, and my new freezer is no longer lonely.

Thanks fella's. I appreciate the comments. When I tell folks our Pronghorn is my favorite western animal, they give me funny looks Wink True, I love Elk, Mulies and all the other great game our west has to offer, but our "prairie goats" are unique to us. The only game animal I'm aware of the sheds their horns annually, are available for most anyone to hunt, and for me, some of the best venison in NA. Good hunting, I hope you all get good bucks this year. David

Thanks for posting your hunt. I think the Pronghorn is a unique and great trophy, among the best North America has to offer. Congratulations. Dr.C
