My Dad, Son and I just returned from a deer hunt in Montana. We hunted BLM, private and state ground in Southeast Montana for 3 days and had a great time. This was my sons first time going along on a Western hunt and he seemed to enjoy it from start to finish. The weather was extremely hot for early November and the previous 3 springs haven't been kind to the game populations. We saw far fewer deer than normal even during the prime early and late hours. Even the jackrabbit numbers seem to be down. We saw a few Mule deer starting to rut. Bucks were busting up brush and tending a few does but I think the weather slowed things down. We never saw a whitetail in rut.

We tried to make this trip educational for my son and showed him sights. We found several teepee rings in the National Forest.

Later that day my son and I were walking a small finger of timber. I had seen a couple whitetail duck into the timber the evening before and thought it might hold a buck. As we approached the end a buck broke out of the timber and ran across the sage brush. I touched one off at about 200 yards. He flipped over midstride and I heard my son say "Dad you dumped him over!!" The 130 gr Accubond from my 270 Win did its job. My son had found a shed and had been "rattling" when the deer broke from cover and we are sure it made all the difference. Smiler

It was extremely special to have him by my side when I shot this buck and to have him experience a Western Hunt.

After we got our deer we found an old tar pit with some fossils that we picked through and showed him fish teeth and turtle shells.

We also hunted some sharptails and prairie dogs. We enjoyed each other company and made memories to last a lifetime.

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

I took my first of many white-tailed deer in 1957 with Holt Olympia recurve bow -- and I been around when many others were shot but that is, without a doubt, one of the 4 or 5 nicest racks I've ever seen.

Many like them wide but I love them when they're high and thick -- he's a dandy and so is your son.
