Need advice on a Moose hunt (pistol)

I have a patient that I operated on (I've been with the Dept of Defense for the past 5 years) that I've promised to take moose hunting.
He's just retired from Special Forces (medical retirement), and has been a tier 1 operator up until now.

He wants to shoot a moose using his pistol (480 Ruger Redhawk), and I had a hunt lined up for us in Alaska, but I hit a snag. I have to be somewhere on Sept. 14 (can't get out of it), so that interfered with the Sept 10 to 25 season in that area of Alaska.

Can anyone suggest a moose hunt somewhere else that a handgun can be used? I know there are a number of states of course that we could hunt, but some (Maine for example) probably don't have any permits left this late in the game.

Thanks!

Garrett

Maine is a draw state for almost all pf their moose tags. Quebec, Newfoundland, Ontario come to mind. Best of luck.

There is a great offer in October in NewFoundland right now. Look in the hunt offers section.
Not the same as Alaska but nothing really is in terms of Trophy Size

No.........you can't use a handgun to hunt in Canada. Your choices in North America are Alaska or Alaska. Smiler

Not familiar with landowner tag availability in the western US, but if they exist, I would imagine they are few and far between..........and expensive.

If it came down to Hunt with something other than a handgun or don't hunt, he may choose to hunt with a rifle, muzzleloader, or bow

Or...like you said...next year...

The Silver Spur ranch in Colorado is in the Wildlife for Ranching program, if I recall they get 2 Bull tags to sell and a third tag goes to a public hunter. Without asking them I got the impression they were very expensive and they sell out a couple years in advance when I last talked to them.

Why not hunt Alaska the last 7-10 days of the season, then you could make your date on the 14th.?

Interesting, and I bet those few permits do sell well in advance and command a hefty price.

Not sure how badly you want to do this with handgun. I am guilty of overlooking that in my previous reply. Anyways, Maine allows handguns for moose. Back to the "how badly" part. For 13K or so you can get one of 10 tags offerred to bidders in the 2017 Maine moose tag auction. That's wanting it pretty badly!

See the link below for a hunt this year.

You could just hunt the 4-12th. If unsuccessful, fly out of hunting camp on the afternoon of the 12th and return to the lower 48 on the 13th, in time for your previous engagement.

I would think that even as a last resort re-starting the hunt from the 15/16th to the 25th should be plenty of time.

First time I ever went moose hunting in AK our pilot said this in response to a question as we were flying back in:

"I fly out 3/4 of my moose hunters the first week of the season and 3/4 of my moose the second week of the season."

Reminds me I better buy my plane ticket for my moose hunt...
