My married son, who is a career-path army officer, just transferred to Fort Carson, Colorado. He has hunted and fished his entire life -- WITH ME! Unfortunately, the type hunts we went on are way out of his price range (private land elk hunt in Craig, plains game Namibia, waterfowl in Louisiana) now that it's all on his nickel.

Anybody have any suggestions on where to start looking for hunting opportunities in that area? He's in great shape (he's a Ranger-tabbed infantryman recently back from combat in the mountains of Afghanistan), so the mountains won't bother him at all. But money, and time, are an object!

I'll be gathering info to pass along from as many sources as I can between now and hunting season, which comes pretty early in that part of the world.

Thanks in advance for your help.

GAH

Thanks,

My classmate Joe Anderson just turned over command of the 4th ID to take over command of the 18th ABN Corps.

I have some land in Colorado near Bonanza. It borders National Forest and BLM land; the whole area is landlocked.

Your son is welcome to access via our land. I don't think vehicles are allowed in that area.

I have never hunted the area, so I can't offer much. Was there a few weeks ago; saw some cow elk on our land; lots of deer tracks.

PM if interested. The least I can do.

I'll be happy to go over the leftover license list with him to see if there are any deer tags he may want and I can show him some good spots for OTC elk hunts

Thanks to you both for your replies. I'm going to send these threads to him to see if he wants to respond.

He just got there yesterday, so he's tied up with in-processing for the next couple of weeks.

For elk try the Blm and national forest around Skaguay reservoir and north to gold camp road. Also the fringe oak pine forests south of Colorado springs on highway 115 and rampart range road are good. I know of two 400 inch non typical bulls that came out of the above areas. Best of luck.
