OK...since I did not find out much in my NM thread...going to start back with CO.

I am looking for an area with elevations lower than 10K', to hunt elk in, and that is located in the southern part of CO.

Vastness is NOT a problem. I own a good pack-string and outfit. In fact...a long ride is preferable to NOT...as to get away from the truck hunters. Also...not worried about ruggedness as I have made the trip over Saddle Mtn into the Weminuche a few times.

Altitude is a problem for me. Anyone got any good suggestions on where to go???

Levdm,

How about this deal?

I own 55 acres in Colorado that borders Natl Forest near Villa Grove, CO. The land sits on top of a ridge and is beautiful. I have never seen elk on our land in the fall (but only been there once in Sep) but I have seen them there in the winter; there are elk droppings all over the place. Your gear would be secure on our land.

Here is a pic of the area:

I have always wanted to see what the hunting is like, but I don't have horses (there is motor access for about 1000 yards from our property, but after that, horses only). Why don't you go check it out and then we go together some time?

PM me if interested.

I've hunted the area just west of "Another AZ Writers" property. Just a couple miles up from there. Seen plenty of elk and taken a couple bulls in there and some friends have done way better.
PM me if you want more info about the area.
You could do a lot worse in CO than this area.

If you're willing to come north, there is plenty of public land with plenty of elk in NW Colorado below 10,000'.

AZwriter,

Id be interested to do some exploration for you sometime! No horses, but I've got a great pair legs lol

To the poster,
The Gunnison area has a lot of public land and plenty of elk. 551, 55, 56 are good areas without a lot of trouble getting a tag. 67 has some huge bulls but tags are a bit more difficult to come by most of the area is below 10k as well, most of it is in the 8k range. Late seasons can be hell if the snow comes in though.

Mile High,

Normally we go there for a week in the summer. PM and I will give you my reg email address. If we go this summer, I could show the area, etc. The Natl Forest is pretty much landlocked by private property. I haven't had time to hunt but I would trade access for a hunt report.

There are some back country areas not far from Dolores Peak and areas below Dolores Lake and to the East.
I hunted there.

I'm kind of curious that you say that you didn't find out much in your NM thread. After all, I posted this in response to a question you put directly to me when I mentioned looking into northwest and southeast Colorado:

[QUOTE]There are some absolutely huge elk around the towns of Kim, Trinidad and La Junta. There is a DOW office in Lamar and if I was you, I'd get ahold of them and get some info. I've hunted antelope down that way but not elk, so I'm not real clear on the status of tags etc... I'm really familiar with the elk hunting in the northwest area though.

It's worth pointing out that the best elk hunting in NM is around Raton Pass and that the northern part of Raton Pass comes out in Trinidad. Lots of bear around Trinidad as well.

Contact DOW and ask to talk to the big game biologist for that area. I've found the biologists to be a very good source of information in other areas and would imagine that it would be no different in that area. /QUOTE]
