Hey guys, I'm from Bozeman too, Junior (kinda) here on campus. I'd like to meet up with you guys some time to chew the fat, and possibly get the low down on hunting opportunities around here (never been hunting here, shame isn't it?) Anyways, I'm from Columbus, 100mi down the road and do most of my hunting there. Mostly Deer and Antelope, and am really wanting to find a good elk hunting spot. (not necessarily wanting to stomp all over your guys' prime elk spots, just need to be pointed in the general direction, and then I let my feet take me from there.) I'm headed for the Ruby opening weekend and heard it is usually quite crowded *wince* I'll let you guys know how I do. Once again, I extend the invitation to get to know each other, cuz I don't have too many hunting friends in the area.

444shooter,

The Ruby is a good enough place if you don't mind crowds. This is a plus minus deal as there are a lot of hunters around but it keeps moving the elk. I hunted there once and its not for me but some really nice bulls come out of there each year. I hunt, for the most part, in the Bridgers and Gallatin canyon. Walk in a mile and you'll separate yourself from 95% of the other hunters who never leave sight of the road. Elk are unlike dear as they don't usually travel the same routes every day so patterning them is not feasible. They are where you find them. With the snow lately travel some roads and spot some track to see where they at but remember next week they may be out of there completely.
I know I'm not Rimrock or Brad but thought I'd toss my 2 cents in as I live and work in the area.
Good luck this year.

John

John, thank you for the reply...if I had known you lived in the area too, I would've included your name in the subject line As I said, I think it's an absolute shame that I have yet to experience the hunting opportunities around here, haven't been able to find a hunting partner I guess...I'm going out this weekend North of Columbus to try and bag a wylie prairie goat, and I'll let you know how I do. Thanks again for the reply,

Howdy,

I'll be going through Columbus today, en route to Billings for a day of "shopping". Aack....One of my all-time least favorite things! But since it's between antelope and elk/deer season, and my wife's been wanting me to go with for some time. Oh, well, all part of being a sensitive new-millenium kind of guy, huh?
Heck, yeah, I can point you toward better places than the Ruby, although plenty of elk come out of there. E-mail me; bill@cowboyhvn.com

Thanks Bill, I appreciate it. Well saw some nice antelope today, it has been T+ 2hrs since I got mine. A hefty 14 1/2 incher. I'll post the picture as soon as I get it off of my dad's camera.
