Making "logic" in this debate is hilarious, as the actual field differences seen between the various calibers is minute, considering the varying shooting skills, game encountered and country hunted. I tried to apply "logic" to all of my big game kills and determined that of over 50 kills that all except 2 would have been served nicely, if not perfectly by using a 30-06 with a decent 165gr load. This included Elk Sheep Deer antelope under all conditions encountered in Alberta. Does this mean I hunt with an 06 all the time? hell no! Owning, loading and using several calibers a year adds that much more to the experience, even though one caliber can get the job done. Out of 22 days hunting this year, I carried an 06 about 3 hours, long enough to collect a moose with 165 gr hornady loads, 1 shot.

The reason why I bought an 30-06 over other calibers.
When I got into the Market for a Center fire, I had look at, read up on a bunch of different rounds.243-300 Win Mag at that time this group was the most popular an used in the field for Deer-Griz , Now being in the Mil. I figured some time in my career I'd be stationed some where out west to be able to hunt many animals bigger that eastern whitetails. So to me that excluded every thing below 7mm. Then it was which was easy to find reloading components for( Seletion of bullets played a large part). So at that time given this criteria the Good old 06 won hands down. I've never been a Magnum Guy so they were out of the picture quick! Could never get over the abuse you had to take for such little gain

Ya Rickt300,you oil field trash really help out the community. As for treating women right,hell rick you like boys so what would you know about women anyway. As for the texas dipshits that are attracted to the opposite sex, however few they may be,they don't treat their families and women nicely. Which all becomes evident with every oil or methane boom. The first thing that happens,is law enforcement adds officers,family services add case workers and parole and probation add a bunch of officers also,since most of the okies and texans coming in are under some type of state supervision.

Then none of your oil field trash has any type of financial credit,so they put everything in their girlfriends name or who ever they're shacked up with.When the boom ends they take off for the next boom and leave these people bankrupt.Which is their own fault,since they were low enough to hump a texan anyway. The real estate prices are great though,since the banks are left holding hundreds of properties and need to dump them.

As for safety and skill,the increased traffic through the hospital emergency rooms during a boom, shows that texans aren't exactly osha approved. Most of them are missing toes or fingers coming in and when the boom is over they're missing a few more.

I can believe you're from rock springs,between it and gillette wyoming, the two have to fight for which is the bigger shithole. Neither town has more then a dozen people who are actually from the area.

Rick & Brian - I'm sure you have heard the term "Shit for Brains?" Well RMK is the poster boy for this group of dim bulbs.

One thing is for sure, RMK doesn't know squat about oil field workers. For one thing, as a group, they are the most wholesome, down to earth, nicest bunch of guys you'll ever be around. They may get ungodly dirty now and then on the job...but it's damn hard, dirty work and most guys (RMK for sure) aren't man enough to DO their job or have the guts to try, I'm sure. On the topic, I do belive that the 06 can take all North American game, but many people up here take the 338 for the bigger bullet and more oomph for the big moose and bear. I like my 358 norma because it gives me more oomph than the 338 and a slightly larger bullet.

Don't pretend to be an authority..just curious.
A 300 Win Mag shoots a 200 grain bullet flatter and faster than a 30.06 shoots a 150 grain bullet. Nobody says a 30.06 is any where near a 300 WM..BUT..when you reduce the case capacity of a 30.06 to the level of a .308 (somewhat similar to the reduction from 300 WM to 30.06) you now have supposedly equal rounds. I have some difficulty understanding how a SAAMI safe full load of IMR4831 driving a 165 grain bullet in a 30.06 could possibly the same as a SAAMI safe full load in a smaller case .308. Aside from the obvious same projectile but smaller propulsion argument my only ever field test showed a significant difference. At our hunt camp we took two rifles..both Remington semi autos..one was a #7400 synthetic 30.06 carbine with 18 1/2 " barrel..the other was a #742 .308 carbine also 18 1/2" barrel. We shot same weight bullets into presplit birch firewood at many different ranges including a few at 340 yards on the gps (unfortunately we had to shoot a lot because we couldn't hit very often at this range). It seemed that in virtually all shots the 30.06 did more damage and/or penetrated more than the .308 ..just my two cents, and I like all three calibers.

Harley, maybe another way to put all this is as a fellow goes up and down the scale of rifle cartridges, eventually you hit a cartridge that just does it for you. Power. Velocity. Trajectory. Bullet Choice. Whatever. And that's where you get off. You take that rifle and it's your choice. It just feels right for you and gives you the warm fuzzies where other's won't because of this or that...too much or too little of something usually.

Whether anyone likes it or not, whether it's right or wrong or "makes sense" to anyone is really immaterial. The historical fact is the 30/06 DOES all the above for more people than anything...and it pretty well has claimed that title for 100 years. And not even the guys who don't support the /06 will say this cartridge isn't a damn good one. (At least the guys who know anything.) Sure there are bigger, faster, meaner cartridges out there. But they all come with a price.

I guess what I'm saying in the answer to "30/06 Logic" is there IS NO LOGIC. We are silly to try to apply "logic" to an "illogical decision."

Any /06 fan can give you lots of reason for their choice. Whether you subscribe to that train of thought of not is more of a person decision than "logic." Each side can point to things in the other's list and say, "This isn't good or not worth it."

Anyway, that's my final thought on the subject. I don't think there is much "logic" to any of it at all. We just shoot what we like. Even idiots like Genghis have favorites. And this is what makes the world go round and why we don't all shoot .223AIs with our limp wristed friend.

Welcome to the bashing thread! The 30-06 (are we still talking about that?) is the good old American cartridge that all others are compared to. An all around do it all cartridge. Every hardware store has some ammo for it. Every common gun maker makes at least one. It will handle heavy bullets well and light ones too. But no matter what you shoot, if you shoot it enough, you will learn where it hits at the distance you shoot it at. Is it any batter than the .308 at hunting ranges? NO!!! Nor is it any better than the 8X57 or the 6.5X55 at hunting ranges. If you need to shoot an animal at 375 yards you better know where your rifle hits at 375 yards. If you don't, the point is moot! Or buy an automatic for the "spray and pray". Maybe a guy should get an FN-FAL with a bi-pod and a 20 round mag. The bottom line. Practice what you shoot at the distance you expect to shoot.
