500Grains: Your opening question is about the dumbest comment I've heard from someone who "claims" to be a hunter. Further, if that's what you really believe, you shouldn't have a hunting license. If that is not a reflection of your true beliefs, then why post something like that? It only serves to provide the anti-hunters with ammunition. Disgusted Canadian, CDW

I wasnt going to dignify this with a reply but find I have had all the BS I can stand. I am a meat hunter! I am also a trophy hunter! The two things are not mutually exclusive! When I was growing up we hunted for meat beacause we needed to. I do it now because I prefer it. The bottom line is that it is wrong to intentionally waste anything, particluarly a game animal. I understand that shit happens and that sometimes things go wrong. You make a bad shot or something else goes wrong. You do and will waste some meat, it is the nature of the beast. Even if you are not going to use the meat someone else can or feed it to the dogs just dont waste it. I understand that you have to make 3 or 4 shots at times that is not the issue. It is a lack of respect and the wanton waste of a resource that I object to. If you know you cant make the long shot then dont! Get closer. Spend more time at the range. Do whatever it takes but dont waste it. Whenever I go out of the country fishing or hunting and I know I cant bring the meat back I make sure someone can use it ahead of time. There will always be some meat that cant be used but that is completey different from a total disegard of respect for all. ------------------

HI I rather loose a couple of meatballs extra then the entire animal. There is plenty of meat on most game, need some more shoot another one. Old farts in Sweden often nag and haggling about meat lost and all this shit. I get soooo tired of this my ears will fall off. / JOHAN

ears are not that bad, as long as you cook-em up right away! Dude that's tired when your ears fall off!

I eat as much as possible from what I kill, so I usually try for a behind the shoulder lung/heart shot on most game around here. If I was hunting really big or tough game I would try for the shoulder to anchor it. But I am very picky about shots, have passed more than a few wanting for the best shot. Good luck and good shooting

Well gee whiz! We all can't be perfect shots in the field now can we? The last time I looked, this was still a forum on hunting, so one man's meat is another man's indigestion plainly put or mishap for what ever reason. Now to answer the question presented in the first post gentlemen! I can't remember the last time I thought about damaging any meat with my shot......I have however thought about ruining a rack or two by comtemplating a high neck shot once or twice, seeing as the animal in question was somewhat hidden by a tree or brush. Lets not leave out the old Texas heart shot for those North bound bucks in the woods either. I did break a rack doing taking that shot once, second shot downed the deer as I hit it in the rear with a 12 gauge slug. Yep! I messed up some no doubt tasty venison, but at the time I was only concerned about NOT losing the buck. A mear minor sacrifice is all it was anyway, I still had plenty of meat to eat later. I most certainly have in years passed years, clobbered an animal with a high velocity caliber, only to have a bullet blow up or just as bad catch a front shoulder by accident (heck we all can't be perfect shots all the time can we?) and have a bullet ruin that section of the animals meat. I didn't cry over it, not once I put my hands on the rack it was proudly showing off before hand.
