It is a nice cool night tonight and it didn't rain today for a chnge so I was sitting outside a minute ago enjoying the evenig cool. When I hear a sound like an infant screaming, it's not real loud and I judge it was probably in the tree bottom in the pastrure south of my house about 1/4 mile away.

The only time I have heard this sound in the past was when I was chasing Mountain Lions on horse back with dogs when I lived in Wyoming. It's a pretty distinctive howl that sounds like an infant/baby screaming.

I'm a little leary of thinking this is a Mountain Lion though since Kansas has had so few verified sightings of them.

On a maybe related note my cousins have some cow/calf pairs running in that pasture but this was definitely not a cow or calf sound. I've been around cattle my whole life and never heard one make a sound like this. Only mountain lions.

I wish I had been quick enough to get my camera and try to record it but by the time I thought of that it had already gone quiet again.

My question;
Is there any other animals that make that same infant/baby screaming sound?

Thanks for any help

Dying rabbit or fawn deer is the only two I can think of besides maybe a house cat....
If it's not one of them it may be a big kitty.

Hmm, how close are you to the neighbors bedroom? OR maybe someone is killing a woman down there. Way too much of that goes on these days.

Hope you get it figured out and share the findings with us.

It's that time of the year. Housecats can make some godawful sounds. Because they are so plentiful I think that's a fair guess.

Siamese cats when in heat can make a terrible howling that sounds like a baby. Here's a link to a youtube video and see if it's similar to what you are hearing.

Mating Bobcats make a scream that sounds exactly like a woman screaming. Foxes scream but it is more gruff/hoarse sounding. The Bobcat scream is clean and clear; will scare the hell out of you if your not familiar with it. Can vary in loudness from soft to very loud.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I've heard rabbits cry and all different kinds of noises from domestic cats, so I knew it wasn't those.

I found a website that had mp3's of animal calls and listened to your suggested animals and I think it was probably a Bobcat. Seems more likely than a Mountain Lion and nearly sounds the same.

Thanks again for the help.

AS a side note, my closest neighbors are almost a mile away and elderly, so I did get a good chuckle out of the bedroom suggestion.

At least it wasn't wasted huh?

Matt: One time on the ranch the folks brought a Siamese squaller home with them. I still had a box trap from my bobcatting days. Stuck that cat in it and staked it down out in the middle of the field. IT never shut up! Best coyote caller I've ever seen. Ended up killing seven in about 3 hours with the one setting and I fired from the corrals at just over 120yds.

People would give the folks lots of cats, they couldn't keep any around long til the coyotes got 'em. Dad would find fur in the sage brush often. Mom had a time of raising chickens too.

I guessing it is a fox. We have a lot of them here in Kansas, and they do make an earie screaming sound.
