This is actually a european red stag head that has similar characteristics to an elk head. Since I will be heading over to the US next year on a DIY elk hunt in the Weminuche wilderness I was just wondering how this head would compare to what I might find there? I am not going over there with great expectations of a huge trophy, but I want to have an idea of what I should consider a shooter. I don't have the measurements nor are they important to me, at a guess it must be around 40" along the main beam. My real question is; if this was an elk would you shoot it? And can I hope to do better in Colorado going DIY?

Hell yes it would be a shooter, and I personally don't believe you should expect to do that well, and certainly not EXPECT to do better on a DIY elk hunt, first time around in Colo. Not just that it's Colo, but unless you have some really good intel and inside location information, it is hard to get on a Public Land elk that has high quality bulls (of which that would be one) abundant. Obviously there are a 1000 variables, I know a guy who's first buck was a 160" beast in middle ga, where there were very few bucks of that caliber available at all in that area then (and now really) but none the less, he climbed a tree I recommended with his climber, and shot a monster 12 point typical just 30 minutes or so after getting up the tree--only his 4th or 5th deer, so one of a million examples of what CAN happen. Best luck to you--and BTW, that is a nice stag.

I hope you have some good intel the Weminuche is huge Lots of area to wander around in. Any legal bull elk on a first time DIY would be a good elk.

I have been investing hours on the phone with DOW field biologist, forestry services, anyones who's name comes up in articles on the area and anyone who has been willing to spare their time. These people have all been wonderful. So far I have gathered a lot of information and I am confident that I will not be unprepared when I get there. I have chosen which unit I will put in for the 1st rifle season draw, and I have worked out which part of that unit I want to concentrate on. We still have 10 more months of planning to go. If anyone else is prepared to help me gather or offer any information that would be greatly appreciated.

I agree any legal bull in a public area is a good trophy, but elk are unique in terms of a specimen "worth mounting." There is simply a huge difference between a 6 pt bull and anything smaller. Red stag, however, are different. There isn't such a "line in the sand" so to speak.

that is definitely a shooter and you should be prepared to shoot the first legal bull as it may be the only bull you see Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
