My wife has shoulder problems that started falling off horses as a teen and got worse in a boating accident a few years ago. She started rifle shooting with a handloaded 280 Rem. Mtn. Rifle using 120 Barnes XBTs for deer size game and 140 XBTs for caribou. Until the boat mishap she was able to rifle shoot and even shot some trap, but since then she had to give up trap and has downsized the 280 to 7x57 in a Rem. Mtn. Rifle configuration w/ a hand fitted stock and Kick-Eze pad. The 120 Barnes TSX and 130 North Forks are the go-to bullets now.

You might consider a KDF muzzlebreak.

I had one on a 300 WBY Mag with the thin barrel on their synthentic stock. With factory loads and my factory equivelent loads it kicked like a 243.

I have shot several different muzzle breaks over the years, the KDF seems to be the best.

If I was starting a woman, or a younger hunter out with a rifle, I'd buy her a 250 Savage and never look back. After she's mastered that rifle, I'd move her up to a 7x57, or a 7-08.
I like doing things in steps as a bigger boomer MAY turn her off completely.

Hmm, my wife's favorite is a vanguard sub moa stainless in 338 win mag with timney trigger. Her second favorite is a rem 700 XCFR in .375 H&H. 3rd would be 45-70. I am not sure where the rest fall.

My wife likes to shoot my Ruger m77.257 Roberts, and a Ruger .44mag semi auto Deerfield. She loves the deerfield, and shoots it as good as anybody ever has. She flat embarrassed one of my buddies with it shooting at clangers at 125yrds....offhand.

Ditto my wife, to a tee. I would also like to get her something a bit larger myself. She just got a NM bull elk tag in a real good unit, so I may use that as an excuse to add to her arsenal. I'm leaning towards a .308 or even a .338 Federal, which could be tough since I'd like to stick with a tang safety Ruger just to keep things consistent for her.

I think I'll look more at the 7X57 or the 257 roberts. I think she could handle the mauser O.K. If not I can.

I always enjoy these threads. Funny how the sex of the shooter is what determines 'enough gun".

In one thread, you hear how tough a Zebra is to kill and the minimum caliber is such and such magnum.

The next thread is tales of wives, daughters, and girlfriends slaying zebras with their 7mm-08........

My wife shoots a .30-06 I made for her. A 1" recoil pad and moderate handloads keep the recoil from being too much.

My sister is about 5' and 110 pounds. She started out on a Browning Micro medallion in .308 and still has it. Since she was looking for a little more distance, we set her up with a Rem 700 in .280 AI with a brake.

My wife doesn't hunt a lot, but she loves a little 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser I have in my minor arsenal. So much that she calls it "her" rifle and I'm not going to argue that point with her.

Hey guys I didn't draw my tags, but of course she has to be the lucky one. Se drew a buck tag so now I have to find something for her. I was out shooting my 8X57 yesterday and she thought it kicked to hard from what she saw. I forgot I had a 94 in 30-30. Maybe we'll give that a shot, also shooting a 765 yesterday, that and the 30-30 felt like they had the same recoil to me. I got an extra mauser action to do something with also. My thinking is going all different directions.

7x57 mm mauser seems to offer low recoil in a good stock plus excellent bullets.

Seems like a 6.5X55 would be a nice cartridge for that action. Work up a mild load with 130-ish grain bullets and you have a wonderful deer stopper. Mine really likes 129 grain Hornady SSTs, which I've used to shoot several antelope and mule deer. Not one of those critters has stopped an SST yet.

I would give the nod for a 7x57 or 7-08 for a good hunting rifle for those of the feminine persuasion to cut their chops on. As with any gun, don't let her watch you shoot it, recoil always looks worse than it feels.

Any caliber used to shoot deer or hogs would be good for shooting your wife.

One day my wife brought home a Remington M700 BDL .270 she bought used and asked to go shooting. She does really well with it.

But she would like something a little lighter to pack around so she's been eyeing my M96 Swedish Mauser 6.5 X 55. I'm keeping my M70 Winchester Featherweight hidden. After all I do have my limits!

My wife hunts with a 20 gauge Franchi AL48 shotgun - quail and chukar.

No rifle hunting...yet. But I suspect that I will lose my beloved .257 Roberts right quick if she ever decides to take up Big Game hunting!

Damn, better start shopping for that replacement now Huh?

Mrs Blacktailer has a Kimber Super America in 308. I started her off with 130gr reduced loads and slowly worked up from there. She is now shooting 165gr TSX at 2750fps and has taken bushbuck, fallow deer and zebra. She even lets me shoot it sometimes if I ask nice. Big Grin
She let me use it on the impala below.

I built a blind for my daughter last year at the far end of a hay field where it forms a kind of a cul-de-sac. Maximum shot, about fifty yards. The buck brothers walked out of an old logging road about ten yards from the blind. She waited until they drifted apart enough for a clear shot and took her first whitetail. A nine pointer.
Her gun? A Remington twenty gauge pump that double lunged him with a slug.
I've field dressed and butchered a lot of deer over the years and I can assure you that deer was just as dead as any deer I've ever seen hit with what us guys consider a "Big Gun".

My wife confiscated my Mannlicher Schoenauer Model 1903 in 6.5x54 MS. She doesn't hunt, but she sure likes shooting that little gem. I keep telling her I'm going to use it for deer, but she replies that I can't take it out and teach "her" gun any bad habits.

Funny thing is, I had the rifle before I ever met her, but she sure lays claim to it now. Big Grin
