I caught this buck chasing & tending a doe at daylight this morning here on my farm in north Alabama. He would not leave this doe... and it was his demise. She led him out into a standing soybean field and as it got lighter I could see he was an exceptional buck. His rack looked like a picket fence. I watched them for about 45 minutes as the buck postured and bluff charged to run off two small bucks.

Shot was a little over 200 yards with my .280 Remington model 700 with a Zeiss Terra 3x9 scope. I really like this gun & scope. The buck is a 7x7 and rough scores 174 gross. Don't know the weight, but he was not terribly big and was probably not over 4.5 years old.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dang! That is a dude! Is this early for the rut in your area? I seem to remember the Bankhead herd had an early rut, but didn't think other parts of Alabama did - I thought that was pretty localized around Bankhead. I'm sure you know that South/Central where I hunt is late Jan/early Feb...

Wow, now that is a beautiful whitetail!

Thanks guys.

I'm in the very north part of the state, just a few miles from the Tennessee border. I have always noted rutting activity around here to be picking up the week of Thanksgiving into the first week of December. You don't have to go too far south from here and the rut gets later.

Happy Thanksgiving!

ha, ha... I did have time to calm down before the shot which is always good, but it took 15 minutes to get light enough to realize what a nice buck it was and he was not in position for a safe shot considering the backdrop. I had to wait for him to move a bit.

That must have been an agonizing wait hoping for him to move for a safe shot. Unbelievable buck.

Holy smoke, I have lived in Alabama all my life and never have I seen a buck like that. Back in the 1950s they stocked some deer from Michigan in certain areas and those areas do have an early rut. That deer must have genes from that stocking.
