I can't speak for the veracity of these photos, but the scenery does indeed appear to be Coleto Creek Reservoir between Goliad and Victoria, TX. If that is indeed true, the gator is quite large for this particular area. The gator season is closed, so I can only assume this was a parks decision to remove the animal. I have heard several times that a large gator was getting bolder and bolder and possibly becoming a threat to park visitors. But again, I can't confirm the validity of these pictures but am working on it. Bobby Μολὼν λαβέ The most important thing in life is not what we do but how and why we do it. - Nana Mouskouri

Bobby: I was just hunting down there with the Texas Predator Posse and I had one that was that big or nearly so, in a water hole in a dried up river bed in front of me, this was quite close to Coleto Creek Res. Water hole was about the size of a backyard swimming pool. I tried to get one of our semi-cajun hunters to catch her for me, but he politely and not so gracefully declined. She (I assume) was surrounded by at least 15 or 20 babies about 2 feet long. Bad drought down there, it is possible the above gator relocated to the Coleto Creek Reservoir due to his home range drying up. Of course this is pure speculation on my part, but that gator in front of my blind wasn't. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Charlie- The drought here is horrible, and everything is scorched. The record heat is not helping, either. The past 12 consecutive days have reached 100 degress or higher, and today looks to make 13 as it's already 98 with a predicted high of 101. The past 21-month period is the driest ever on record. The nearest daily paper apparently just confirmed that the gator was taken out Wednesday by gator specialists from El Campo, TX and that is was 11 1/2 feet long. On http://www.victoriaadvocate.com/ ,some idiots, instead of being thankful the gator is gone, are crying bloody murder. What morons... What did they think could be done, put a leash on 800 pounds of muscle and walk him over to a new area and say “Stay here and don’t bother anyone”??? Charlie-As to the gator you saw, if a semi-Cajun politely declined to do a mud dance with the 'gator, then you know for certain that it was a rather large reptile ... There is no hay to be made and no corn or milo to be harvested. Creeks and tanks have gone dry. And cattle are being sold off in record numbers. Sadly, there is no measurable relief in sight. I know of several families who've lost their farms and ranches, many of which have been handed down from generation to generation. But you can bet you won't see Obama helping these people out with any stimulus funding. Bobby: For your link to work, you need to remove the comma at the end of your link. Lacking any hogs to shoot, and sitting there in a sauna, I studied that gator quite a while thru my 10x42s. Water hole was about 100 yards from stand. She never got on shore so it was difficult to really get an exact measurement/guess, but I could see about 75% of her from time to time and I am certain she was between 10 1/2 to 12 feet and probably around 11 to 11 1/2. I'm not a gator expert, but I don't think she was as chunky as the above gator, maybe because she was female, or perhaps she had had fewer groceries for a while in that waterhole. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. Larry Janik has taken some huge gators. That's a nice one but I have been at his place when he's brought in some bigger ones. Most of the biggest come from Lake Texana. A good way to judge the length of a gator is the inches from his nose to his eyes will usually equal the length in feet. So if you just see the head you can make an accurate guess as to the length.

I've read that way of estimating length, but the problem is most people have a damn hard time guessing inches right in front of them, doing it on a gator at a 100 yards is not as easy as it sounds. OTOH, a 300 WM between the eyes makes measuring easy..... xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. That is a big gator. I have hunted them since 1979 when the season opened in Louisiana. After 30 years and about 1500 gators, we have killed only one over 12' long. Lots between 11 and 12. The season starts in less than two months. We should receive about 45 tags this year. Prices for the hides will be next to nothing this year.

ive seen lots of smaller gator's around the boat launching area's on lake texana... the 1's on the east side of the lake, facing west will have several gators on them when the weather starts cooling off..... if you get out on hy 59 south of town where the guadalupe river is, you'll see normally see several in the swamp.... go big or go home ........ Well you know the whole problem with that nose to eyes thing is most guys seem to think 6 inches is really about 9 inches... Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Not me, I had a girl once say, "Give me 12 inches and make it hurt." ......but did Gatogordo take a camera with him. Noooooooooooooo! Here is the 6 footer that was guarding the tank under the bridge (Bill Goat Gruff style) just inside the gate of the ranch we were hunting. Yes they are native to Texas and there is a season on them. I'm hurt........but I blame my continued lack of hunting success on the hunt organizer......I could have followed his leadership and shot a couple of raccoons but they weren't small enough to meet his standard...... We won't mention that said hunt organizer hunted the same blind the gator was outside of the day before and didn't see it, will we? xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. We killed an honest 12 footer here the second or third year the season opened (early eighties). It was a dwarf compared to the ones they have at Bush Gardens in Tampa. Don't know what they feed them, no one could tell me their age either. They weren't Croc's either. The roller coasters didn't scare me as much as those gators did. If I remember they had four of them.

As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a "little" bear, snake or gator. You guys that fool with gators have to be wacko. Have fun anyway.
