I seem to recall 10% population growth being bandied about even before the foot and mouth problem put a stop to stalking and culling. This last winter has seen a big expansion in herd sizes locally. ------------------

"Not enough deer are being killed," said Simon Booth, the director of Deer Initiative. He blamed the lack of a national culling policy in England and Wales.

They keep talking about "eploding deer populations", where I live too, I've shot a bunch of 'em and I've never seen one explode!? ![]()

National Culling policy? Of course, to be carried out by suitably regulated and qualified stalkers. Who could possibly administer such a grand plan?.........arrange the training?.......issue the qualifications?.........decide on the cull levels?...........penalise those who do not meet their cull targets?.............surely not The Deer Initiative! Love the concept - hate the reality! I'm with 1894 on this one! rgds Ian

Well they must have discarded the Realtree with the nice spring morning we're having. Counted 11 deer in 100 acres and shot my first antlered roe doe. I knew it was a doe from the tush but had a bit of a turn when I saw the head!

1894 - I shot an antlered doe near Aldershot about six years ago. Not big antlers, just knobs really. It was an old 'un. ------------------ Richard

Some of the bunnyhuggers here i Norway are also talking about "profesional hunters". There is not a human right to own firearms and hunt, they say. Its better taken care of by the government when neccesary. Im a bit scared when such idees pop up in the newspapers and on telly. Because most of the urban population have no ide about hunting and what hunting means in regard to regulating wildlife to a level that nature can sustain without doing damage to the environment and to the species. In such cases they shout "Government culling program !!" Obviusly ignorant that there are hunters that are more than willing to hunt if the expences are kept at an affordable level, and hunting seasons where such that one had a minimum of time to go to the woods and fields.
