Overkill, what is you facination with this velocity does or does not kill differently? Are you trying to make a point in the way that says because a 22-250 is going 3800 fps that it would do a better job at killing an Elaphant than a 460 mag going what, 2400 2500 fps??? I have a 30-06 and a 300 win mag, and both do a fine job of killing and if both were to hit lungs and heart, the animal will be dead reguardless of the speed of the bullet at 100 yards. But to say that there is no noticable differance in the damage done is just plain insaine.
I'm glad this post has come up. I personally tested a 7-08 with a 30 inch barrel against a 300 mag with 7 1/2inch barrel. I admit it wasn't totally my idea,I took the idea from Big Stick. The kicker is,even the 7-08 outperforms the 300 with that barrel length. Boy what a finding.
I suppose this will be one of those 20 page posts, like the Sierra Matchking not a hunting bullet post. I need to think up a real controversial post myself.

Why wouldn't a .300 and a 30-06 perform about the same at 100yds. Driving the same bullet that is. Any extra "umph" the .300 has (and it does have it)is going to be spent on the far side of the animal after the bullet passes thru it. I would think that any like calibre rounds that do pass entirely thru the animal would give similar results. Of course, with bullets that were crafted to fit the fps niche of the rifle, ie a Grand Slam might not open up at .300savage speed while a remington core lokt may go to pieces when fired from a .300wby. Once the bullet passes thru the animal, it doesn't make any difference how fast it is going. And that is the fallacy of the love affair American shooters have with speed in and of itself.

A 30-06 with a 180gr bullet at 2875 has 2500 ftlbs of energy at 200 yard's.A 300 Weatherby with the 180 at 3100 has 2900 ftlbs of energy.I don't think the moose has an on board ftlbs gauge...
------------------ I HUNT LONG RANGE.AND YES I USE MATCHKING'S.
Energy has nothing to do with it. It is momentum. The Weatherby has more momentum than the 06. Because of that is has more knock down force. I think that this point has been beaten to death in the knock down threads.
By the way as the scientific experts have proven beyond doubt with mathematics there is no way either the Weatherby and I mean any Weatherby or the 06 will knock down anything bigger than a house cat.
So can we just drop this stupid thread now. Overkill/Speed is just trolling anyway.

WOW Overkill, you think that a big bore can knock over an animal?Your lightyears ahead of us mere mortals.Heck,I didn't know my 458 could knock over a deer,I always used a 22 Short. Thanks for making it so clear.
Me thinks if you took your 460,shoved it were the sun don't shine and pulled the trigger,I think it would knock you over and you'ld stop making stupid posts.Yes no maybe?
------------------ I'm out to wrong rights, depress the opressed, and generaly make an ass of myself!
hi I beleive your qustion is very correct and a couple of 100 fps more(if same kind of bullet is used) will not make a great diffrence in killing power. it is commun beleif that every thing that farts higher will kill better! These couple of hundreds of FPS is gained by a lot more powder and pressure.keep on hunting in nice and wild north Sweden. Best regard Danny

I stand by my knock down test. I think that answers your question. I also don't think that there is a bit of difference between a 30-06 and a 300 Weatherby out to about 600 yards. At ranges past that most hunting rifles aren't accurate enough to reliably hit the kill zone of a deer so the point of added velocity is mute.
If however you have a very very accurate 300 Weatherby it would be an effective deer rifle out to about 1000 yards. Oh, the shooter would have to be very very capable too.
