Gentlemen,
Have misplaced the website address for the company that converts (sleeves) SxS shotguns to .50-70govt.
Anyone happen to have the name handy?
Assistance appreciated.
Best Wishes

There are these guys, they make chamber adapters and shotgun inserts, but I don't see anything in 50-70.
What gauge gun are you looking at doing?
A 12 ga might get too thin to go with a 50-70??
Maybe if you kept the pressures low it would do okay.
Are you going to do both barrels?

Has anyone here used these? What kind of accuracy is there?
I know that a proper drilling or combo is really the way to go and intend to get one "sometime" but until I do this seems like a decent option - a "poor man's cape gun" using a 16" insert in 30-30/.30-40 Krag/.45-70 in a 12 ga sxs. Here in the Nebraska the pheasant season doesn't stop during the general and anterless-only deer season. I often push whitetails out of the CRP when pheasant hunting and the option to take one if the right shot presented itself would be nice. Thanks for any feedback.

post your question in doublerifles
50-70 is a a VERY short round, and one I wouldn't think about for a double .. 50-110 much better, as you can run at low low pressures

i am building a 45-120

opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club

Gentlemen,
The company I have mentioned installs "inserts" full length for barrel length and regulates same for the .50-70govt cartridge.
However, I wish only to have one barrel so modified, resulting in a Cape Gun.
Very practical for my needs.
I just can't remember the name of the company. Was hoping someone on this board might have been in contact with them.
Best Wishes

I sleeved a 12 ga with 470 NE inserts. What kind of gun do you have?
I used a Belgian SxS. It has the Greener cross bolt, but I think it was a lighter upland game frame. It's held up okay, but I think a cartridge with less bolt thrust would make it happier.
I think that a rimmed version of the 416 Rem, maybe longer, would make a nice conversion caliber. Load it to only 40K and get a 400gn up to 2150 fps. With the smaller cartridge base, it lowers the bolt thrust quite abit.

There has been some talk about the 450 no.2, and while it does operate at lower pressures, the huge case generates more bolt thrust than a smaller case loaded to higher pressures and getting the same 500gn @ 2150fps.

There was different 16 and 12 ga frames, they made light ones for upland game and then a heavy frame for water fowl. So a heavy 12 ga would probably hold up better.

Sounds like fun, though a 45/70 would be easier/cheaper to feed and a 577 Snider would be more interesting/exotic. Since you want a cape gun it seems to me most any real gunsmith could sleeve a barrel for you and install sights with which to zero for ball...no regulation needed per se. FWIW EAA used to sell a 45/70 barrel insert for their Izhmash 12 bore doubles though I recall they were intended for the 20 inch cowboy guns.

A local shop here had 2 of the 45-70 inserts. I don't know if they are still there. They were for a 20" barrel and had an excentric bushing that screwed into the choke tube threads and allowed for regulation.
The insert had a built in extractor that moved with the 12 ga extractor.

My 470 regulation was similar in that I shimmed the end of the barrels to get them printing together, then soldered in place. I got some NECG sights, milled a flat on the bottom and installed on the vent rib.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your suggestions.
However, we are fully equipped for the .50-70govt and have no desire for anything other. It fits our overall game plan quite well.
Now if I can just remember where I saw that one shop's ad........or email address.
Best Wishes

Mr. GeorgeS,
No sir, it was not.
It was a smaller outfit as I recall. Possibly westcoast?
Thank you for your assistance, nevertheless.
