Wasn't sure where to post this.....
This is my regular old "plain jane" Browning A-Bolt Composite Stalker in .300 WSM that I've had for about 8 years now. I use it for the majority of my hunting. I use it a lot and it's a tack driver right out of the box (usually shoots between 0.5" and 0.75" groups at 100 yards with Federal Premium ammo).
Anyways.....it came with the normal black stock, and I was going to get it camo dipped with Advantage Max-1.....that is until I had a stroke of genius. I decided to just paint it myself!! I am very pleased with how it turned out. It cost me a whole $8.94 (+ tax) worth of Krylon and I think I like it better than being dipped. I used Khaki for the base coat and OD Green over pine needles for the "grassy" look. My baby looks like a brand new gun!!

Black is alright.....but I do a lot of close-quarters treestand hunting with this rifle and I don't like the black stock because it sticks out like a sore thumb. I do, however, understand that my gargantuan Zeiss scope doesn't help much.....but I think this will still be better!! haha

Yes, I took the action out. I also took off the recoil pad and the sling.....and used blue painters tape to block the areas where paint shouldn't go (i.e. - inside the back where the recoil pad fits on, inside the action bed, on the sling swivels, etc.....) I normally hate camoflauge stocks too, but I really like this style of "camo". It breaks up the outline very well and looks pretty cool.

Hot CoreThe flicks where it is leaning on the trees really puts the camo into perspective. Did you use the Krylon "Fusion"?
One of the rag-hacks(barsness) put in print that a scope with an Objective over 40mm was totally worthless.
He sure has a LOT to learn. Nice scope which will allow you to see things many people will never know was near them.

No.....I used the Krylon "camoflauge" paint, which is made for plastic and most other stuff. $4.47 a can at Wally World.....

I've got an A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .300 WM that I'm just getting ready to paint. I've got the Aluma-hyde stuff from Brownell's.
I was thinking of using the darker colors for the base so that the pine branches or mesquite that I would lay over for a template would still be green after I hit it with the lighter colors.
What do you think?

Eland SlayerHmm.....I think that would be good. The one thing I would be cautious of, having a dark base coat, is that the lighter color on top might not work as well because of the darker color bleeding thru. But hell, give it a try!! If it turns out too dark, just sand it back down and start over.
BTW it only took me about 45 minutes to do this stock after it was taped up. That was the biggest pain in the ass of the whole process. I used wide pieces of tape and then went back with an Exact-O knife and cut where I needed to in order to get nice clean edges everywhere.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Here is one I just completed in tan with black webbing or on this stock a bit more like it marbling, with bigger open areas.

Well first of all, I don't think much is accomplished when the barrel is painted because it's such a small part of the rifle and it doesn't really stand out in my opinion. Regarding the scope.....it definitely would help hide the rifle better, but I didn't want to paint it. I don't have plans of ever selling it, but if I did, having it painted would greatly reduce the re-sale value.

Krylon holds up very well. I painted my Savage .338 WM over a year ago and hunt at least 2.5-3 days per week, so it is no safe queen.
Here is closeup of the wrist where wear would be greatest:
Used Khaki base then sponged on OD and brown. Did not apply clear coat to avoid shine, but closeup flash was a bit too much light in last picture.

Yes, Krylon on synthetic.
•Follow the prep instructions on the can. Paint thinner on the stock really bonds the first coat.
•Paint in the correct room temps. For the base and matte finishes, I applied very thin coats with a couple of hrs. of drying under a contractors light to heat and dry it. The paint really bonded, and was rock hard.
Also, I painted in the winter so I increased the drying time between the base, webbing and matte clear coat applications (7 days for each, I think?). A week sitting on a home heat register really dries things out.

Surprisingly, the paint is holding up EXTREMELY well. I had my doubts that it would go through the entire season without any chipping or flaking. As far as I can tell, it looks exactly the same as the day I painted it.....and I hunted with it quite a bit this season.

BlacktailerI have repainted my syn stock 3 times in 25 years. It is easy to do, lasts a long time and is way easier than refinishing a wood stock. Plus when you get done it looks like you have a brand new rifle.

RobertDI was thinking of covering my stainless Sako 85S in green and dark brown cloth tape for a safari this summer. It also has a black plastic stock but this painting idea is a good one! I'll have to look into this a bit more.
Wonder if I could paint the barrel, too? That shiny white stainless has got to show up!!

Fish30114Eland Slayer, that looks great. It is a little light for my personal tastes, but the pics with it in the shade with the tree show it's true effectiveness--nice job.
RC, I really like the way your cam out, did you do a dark base first, or just let the factory black be there to show through the needles--or what did you use for the pattern.
I like the looks of it a lot---your landscape light is not straight though, and throws off the composition of your photo....
PS, not to hijack ES thread, but is that an Atlas V-8 bipod on your rig RC?
