Unfortunately, a "270 lovin'jack O Conner" or a "44 lovin Elmer Keith" gun rag writer has never blew the 300 wby horn to put it in the "god like" status the 44 and 270 win have.
The 270 and 44 are classics because that was the standard of the day 40-65 years ago and the 2 men mentioned above fell in love with them, and had a public podium to praise them. (And just about anyone could shoot them with ease.)
Today the sheer amount of caliber, cartridge, rifle chamberings is so watered down, that nothing really stands out anymore. To compare 4 different 300 magnums is rediculous. They're all very versatile, and because of that, most of em' have stood the test of time.
Gun rag writers today are not near as loyal to any one cartridge. they'll praise just about anything that fills the pages, and pays the publishing fees.

Actually, the Wby I think is the classic is not the 300 but the 378. The 378 and its offspring the 460 put a super power rifle on the shelf. Also help keep 416 Rigbys going. If not for the 460 I doubt very much whether we would have seen all the real big big bangers in wildcats or even the rebirth of stuff like 500 Jeffery and 505 Gibbs.
