Looking back at all of the big game I have shot over the years, most was taken with two general calibers of rifles; .280 Remington (or it's European counter-parts the 7x64 and 7x65),and the .375 H&H Magnum. If I were starting over I would like to have the following:

.22 Long Rifle Martini Model 12

.280 Remington Hagn single shot
.375 H&H Magnum Winchester M70 Stainless in a laminated stock

.45-70 Shiloh sharps target rifle

20-gauge Pre-1990 John Wilkes sxs with 27-inch or longer barrels
12-gauge Beretta 686 Onyx O/U with 28-inch barrels

.44 Magnum S&W 629 4-inch
.22 LR S&W 317 Kit Gun

.54 caliber or larger traditional-style percussion muzzleloader

A .22 LR or .300 WBY MAG or 16 Ga double barrel. If it lives in North America I can kill it with one of those three...I have other choices but I tend to get stupid.

Hopefully a minimum battery is something that will only be in theory. If I had to pare down to the bare bones it would be:

Winchester 22lr pump - Granpa gave it to me as my first gun, it's the last one I'll ever part with

S&W model 41 22 LR pistol - If you want to shoot pistols you need a 22 lr to practice with.

Remington 870 12ga with 2 barrels. One barrel is a 28" with IC to Full chokes, the other is a slug barrel with sites. You could hunt any bird anywhere Remington 870 12ga with 2 barrelsand deer in shotgun only states.

Kimber Montana 325 WSM - Easy to carry, very accurate and powerful enough for any game in NA.

Winchester M-70 416 Remington Mag - Powerful enough for any game in Africa. Accurate too.

Springfield Armory XD-45 Compact - Perfect for CCW or any self-defense use. Can use compact or std mags of 10 or 13rds. Accurate, reliable, easy to shoot.

Knight SR-15 M4 - A premium AR-15 for self-defense use. More than accurate enough for varmint hunting if scoped.

Thinking about these I think it's interesting that I wouldn't necessarily keep my favorites but the ones that are the most versatile if I had to pare the list down.
I prefer the 270 WSM over the 325 WSM for deer and antelope which I do the most of. I prefer my AUG to the AR-15 but if you're limited the AR-15 has more parts readily available. I'd be more likely to hunt with a scoped 22 rifle than grandpa's pump but it has FAR to much sentimental value to me (and it's a drill with iron sites).
Interesting to make the list, I just hope it never comes down to having to keep just a few....................DJ

My battery is lacking a scoped longrange biggame rifle, a 44 mag or 45 Colt Redhawk and a Slavia 630.

22 lr Marlin semiauto , cheap scope, magpiegun
6,5x55 sporterized norwegian Krag, aperturesight, competition fieldshooter
270 win Tikka M65, Zeiss 6*42. Very accurate former favourite, now closetresident.
30-40 Krag C.Sharps Highwall, new favourite moose, capercallie, fox and general fun shooting.
35 Whelen Mauser 98, Meopta 4*32, shoots any load well, my "longrange" biggamegun.
375 H&H 700 Rem, standard ironsights, after one to many hits to the forehead it lost its scope.

22 lr. Ruger 22/45
9 mm Ruger P89
45 Colt Ruger Old Model Vaquero

I'm not paring down.

Edit: I forgot, Valmet 412 12 GA shotgun for grouse, fox and cats.

My current battery consists of....

- Ruger 10/22
- Sako Quad change barrel w/ 22lr and 22mag barrels
- Marlin 39A
- Remington model 7 243win
- Remington model 700 270
- Win 70 classic 7mm RemMag
- 2 AR15's not yet complete (one will be 223, have't decided on the second one yet)
- More shotguns and handguns than I can think of to list without opening up the safe.....

I think that the direction I will go with my next purchase is going to be something in the medium bore class, I'd really like to have a Win model 70 in 375 H&H, either pre64 or classic. My 7 mag is my go to gun right now, and is more than enough gun for what I hunt, but I'd like a 375 just in case an opportunity to use it came up.

Battery just keeps growing. I think it's a disease. Tip for those running out of space - rifle rods. Just finished a walk in vault project and did away with 2 gun safes. Struggled with how to set up gun racks until I found these. Couldn't have worked out better and would also work to increase the capacity of a standard safe by quite a bit. Not attached to this guy in any way, just recommending a product I found extremely useful. Search rifle rods or gun storage solutions and you'll find them if interested. Reluctant to post pics but if anyone wants, send me an e-mail and I'll forward pics of set up.

Too many to list but if paired down to most useful:
6.5x57 TT Proctor bolt-action (custom built)
.22 r/f Anschutz bolt action
.17HMR BRNO bolt action

Those are all you need for England.

For Africa The following worked fine and will again:

8x57 under double 16-bore Rasch drilling
.470 NE Manton & Co double ejector rifle

The above combination cleaned up everything from ducks and guinea fowl to impala, warthog, red lechwe and elephant.
