I've had one in 30-06, beautiful rifle.

mhoI had a .30-06, but did not agree with the double set trigger, so I sold it.
Whether to choose one caliber or the other?? What do you have the opportunity to hunt with this gun??

unk jefferyConsidering the ability of each cartridge to handle game appropriate to it, what would be deciding factors on caliber choice, i.e. which caliber , if you had to choose one, would be your choice in this particular rifle- a 20 inch barreled carbine.

N E 450 No2I would prefer the 30/06. It is a great allround hunting calibre, very handy with the 20" barrel.
I have used a lot of Steyr rifles with the double set triggers, including a SSG that was my Work rifle for many years. I love their double set triggers.
The Mann/Schoen rifles are some of the finest made rifles on the Planet. True Craftsmanship.

DuggaBoyeI have owned 20+ M/S rifles/carbines over the years.(lost count) All have shot well from small calibre to large; personally, I like the DT setup.
Currently down to three-- life changes.
Get the calibre you are comfortable with.
The '06 has more flexibility in type of game, the 243 less recoil. your call.

N E 450 No2If you are just shooting deer and pigs, under 200 yards, in the 30/06 take a look at the Federal 170gr Low Recoil and the Remington 125gr Managed Recoil loads.
They kill deer and pigs great.
My wife, nephew and I have used them with perfect satisfaction.

Allan DeGrootIn an MS carbine?
Why limit the choice only to those two?
Franly I think you should split the difference and go with a 7mm-08

That would be a custom job.
I have a couple of MS customs-
(1 in 6mm by Ackley)
the 7-08 should be made to work of a 308 mag.
I say should because the rotors are cut for each cartridge specifically--
some of the customs feed uncharacteristically poorly--
for a MS- that is.

Do as NE450No2 suggests. You can make an '06 act more like a 243 but not the other way round. +1 on the Remington Managed Recoil and Federal Low Recoil; they've put many a fine meal on our table.

boom stick30-06 all the way but...
Can I vote for the 358 win?
With a 20" barrel that should be about right.
Larger bore and smaller case would be perfect to maximize efficiency.
Would perform about the same as the 30-06 I think.
Shoot hornady spire 180's for deer ect, pistol bullets for plinking and 225 or 250 grain bullets for anything else larger than a deer.

boom stickOr the traditional 9x56 Mannlicher Schoenauer
http://stevespages.com/jpg/cd9...licherschoenauer.jpgFatter bullet for a shorter barrel
Or how bout a pair in 6.5x54 and 9x56 MS?

buckeyeshooterI refuse to use anything smaller than 30 caliber for game deer sized of larger--- so its the 30-06 for me.
