I know it's been done before but it's still a solid couple weeks before I can go fish.

If you had to get rid of all your rifles except one.......or you could just own one and could go buy it.

What type of rifle would be the one. Be specific.

My VZ-24 6.5 X 55 as it's short and light and capable of varminting and elk hunting.....Not the best at either but capable of both.

If I didn't like varminting so much, it'd be a .280 Remington....same action etc!

If I could own only one rifle and one only, I'd have to keep my Montana 1999 in .375 H&H. It covers the world.

If I needed only ONE rifle for all of North America (and I never needed to go to Africa) I'd keep my Remmie 673 in .350 Rem Mag. (Alternative, a Remmie M7ms in .350Rmag would actually be my preference, but if we are limiting to just what's in the safe...)

If I needed only ONE rifle for anything Medium Game and under (ie, Elk max...and even then pick my shots carefully) I'd keep my Remmie M7ms in .257 Bob. For you see, my name is Robert and it is important to have a rifle in my Namesake.

But then again, I don't have to own just one rifle. And therefore I have many others that I like just as much as the next. My Ruger No. 1 in 7x57 Mauser for instance. Or the dream of a Merkel K1 or Blaser K95... nahhhh. I'm good for today. I think I'll just go shooting.

Regards,

Robert

.308 Win
short Mauser action
5 cartridge magazine capacity
22" barrel
open sights
2 pos safety
wooden stock
weighing 7,25lb

i'm not aware of any reasonable priced factory rifles who meets all my criterias.

so i'd probably buy a Ruger Hawkeye, topped with a 3-9x40 Leupold VX-2

Tough question! On the one hand is my M700 30-06 with the custom syn stock and compact 2-7 Leupold. I've hunted with this rig for 25 years and it is an extension of my arm. All I have to do is look at something and the crosshairs magically appear where I'm looking and that's where the bullet goes also.
On the other hand is my P64 M70 in 375H&H stocked by the same smith. I guess the 375 will do anything and more that the -06 will do so...

African DG not included, id hold onto my M70 300 Wby and be just fine. If DG WAS included then then id rebarrel my 300 to 375 wby and call it good!

.338 WinMag. Hits hard as needed, shoots flat as needed. Manageable recoil and plenty of penetration depending on choice of bullet.

If Africa was out of the picture.

1. A 280 Remington

2. 98 Mauser action, preferably from the 1930s. FN second. New bolt handle and action tricked out.

3. Tom Burgess safety

4. Ed Lapour bases and Talley detachable rings.

6. Front open sight and talley peep

7. Quarter sawn, tight grain English walnut with good lay-out. Not overly figured, but a few nice very black streaks against lite background.

8. Barrel band and English style rear swivel base.

9. Red decelerator pad.

10. Any number of barrels, but around .600 at the muzzle with larger shank at action and sharply bugled. 24 inches

Would shoot 160 grain Nosler partitions for everything.

I'd probably flip a coin, and then commit ritual hara-kiri. Don't think there would be any point to continuing earth-bound existance with just one rifle (it sure as hell wouldn't be "living").

The two I'd probably flip between?

A Steyr Professional (NOT SBS) in .376 Steyr, with a late 1950s Lyman Alaskan scope with JUST post reticule (not a post & crosshair reticule), OR

A Brno ZKK 600 7x57 rifle with the pop-up rear peep, standard (not set) trigger, one piece Brno factory scope mount, and Meopta 2-1/2-X scope with post and crosshair reticule, stock option-the one without a Monte Carlo or cheekpiece. Without the use of the coin, I'd have to choose the ZKK.

If I LIVED in Africa or northern
Australia it would be a Westley Richards hand-detachable box-lock double in .450/.400, with 25" barrels, no scope please. I wouldn't be hunting much in those locales, but when I was, it would be primarily for Buffalo, either "Cape" or "Water" type.

Hey Mr. Ted, Tough question just as Blacktailer said. "Maybe" my 350RemMag M7KS with the HEAVY Duplex 3.5-10x 50mm VariX-III.

But, I sure don't want to have to give up the others.

If I had to choose from the rifles I already own it would be between my CZ 550 Safari Magnum .375
H&H and the 550 FS in 9.3 x 62mm. I think I would keep the 9.3 because it's shorter, lighter, and handier. I would cry over giving up the .375 and my 6.5 x 55.

I have my 30-06 and my 375 H&H. The 30-06 has been on lots of hunts, killed many animals for me and was my first rifle, the 375 has lots of custom work done to it, but no animals to its credit. As hard as it would be, it would probably be the 375 H&H I'd keep (a CZ-550). As much as I love and trust my Howa 1500 30-06, I just wouldn't trust it in front of an elephant ... I mean, come on, it's a push-feed!

Let us hope I never need to make that decision. Wink

I only have 3 rifles (257R, 308, 338 Fed), so I'd have to say my 338 Federal. I can shoot 160ttsx at 3,000 fps and 225 Interlocks at 2400 fps and everything in between.

I'm with Alberta Canuck,

I doubt I could survive the trauma of it, and if I did, I would be an empty shell. I've always been a rifle nut (it's a curse).

I guess it would either be my Rem 700 bdl in 308, because it was my father's, or my Win 70 in 30-06, because it was my uncle Leon's. More to do with where those rifles came from and what those 2 people mean(t) (father's still alive, but no longer able to hunt) to me than anything else.

Mine would be a Rem 700 CDL in 7x57 that I have now.
Shilen barrel, and as accurate as any 7x57 going.
The balance of the rifle is superb; it comes alive when shouldering it.
Outfitted with a S&B 4x36 scope. A deadly combo.

To keep - easy: my Winchester m/1895 lever action in 8,2x53R as it today stands modified to take-down and laminated stock.
Red dot DocterSight II and loaded with 200grs Nosler Accubonds.

To buy; toughie.
Probably something in .30-06 or 9,3x62, bolt action w/ quick detachable scope & red dot sight.
Laminated or synthetic stock, stainless metal parts. Detachable box magazine.

If I was a cheater I'd nominate an O/U double with switch combo and shotgun barrels, methinks. Wink

If I were limited to one gun, it would undoubtably be my .358 STA in Model 70 Winchester. It will shoot bullets from 185 grains up to 310 grains, with speeds that would impress anyone. It has been with me from Kentucky to Alaska to Canada to Africa and hopefully will make many more hunts. Good shooting.
