Ingvar J. KristjanssonWhat to add to 30-06 and 9.3x62
To complement a rifle with a 9.3x62 and 30-06 barrel what small cartridge would you add to this set ? My main options are: 22-250, 243, 25-06 and 6.5x55.
12 March 2011, 17:26
cobraIf it were me I would probably go with the .22-250

stigonom243, flat trajectory, more recistant to wind than 22-250, 6,5*55 too close too 3006. 2506 would be nice also since you can neck down 3006 brass.

Donald NelsonGuess it would depend in what I was going to do with the rifle. You have big game covered so I would say 22-250 or .243 for predators and varmints. They are also nice recoil friendly calibers.

If deer size game. go 25-06.

Red C.I'd go with the 243. If you reload, there are bullets down to 55 grains for varmints and up to 100 grains for smaller big game. It is more versatile than the .22-250, however, if all your going to use it for is varmints, I'd go with the .22-250.

Everything I say is fully substantiated by my own opinion.

Nordic2.243 is a good smallgame cartridge.
6,5*55 has the cheepest training ammo for running moose target.

22-250 will handle most anything the 06 might be considered too big to handle. The .243 will also but the 22 caliber does it with a lower expenditure and less recoil.

My choice would be the 6.5x55. Next would probably be the .22-250.

Antelope Sniper22-250.
You have everything else covered with the other two.
13 March 2011, 01:40
Captain FinlanderYour really only need one more to cover the spread and nearly all in you line up would work. I would probably lean towards the 25-06 because all your collection is based on the same or similar case design.

The phrase "little bear", is an oxymoron.

If you shoot a lot of varmints go with with the 25-06.
13 March 2011, 05:30
ColeKI meant to say if you DON'T shoot a lot of varmints get a .25-06.
13 March 2011, 05:58
CrazyhorseconsultingI go along with the 25-06, you can drop down to 75/85 grain bullets, and if you are reloading/handloading, you will only need 1 shell holder for all three calibers, and all three use the same basic group of powders.
Even the rocks don't last forever.

ozhunterA friend of mine has that exact kit with an additional 6.5x55 barrel.

mdstewartIngvar,
That appears to be one of the new Sauer 202's. Great rifle if it is. I would recommend either the 7x64Brenneke or the 6.5x55. You can use both for varmits, yet still use both for medium game. Good luck with the decision. Nice rifle.

dwheels.243. If I didn't already have a 22-250 I believe I would skip over it in favor of the 243. The issue of 55, 58, and 62 grain bullets is the specific reason. I don't like to shoot a steady diet of 243 but I can switch off to the 223 for a little rest when I need it. I also read how a fast twist 22-250 really makes the gun versatile. Yep just about as versatile as a 243. DW

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Dr. Lou6.5x55 since it's a European rifle, otherwise I could just as easily went with the 25-06. I don't like shooting short rounds in rifles with long actions. It's just personal preference.

Ingvar J. KristjanssonThanks for the replies fellas....
Dr. Lou ! I agree with you on the actions size in fact if I choose to take a barrel in 22-250 or 243 I would have to buy another bolt (short) for the Sauer S202 and with today’s prices maybe the only sensible thing to do is to choose between 25-06 and 6.5x55

KurtCI would just trade the .30-06 for a 7x64 and be done with it. You would have everything covered from squirrels to bears.

18 March 2011, 06:05
Alberta CanuckYou are already well equipped for local bears and any of the ungulates. For seals, I personally would much prefer a .243 with post cup & core technology bullets.
I guess it partly depends on how much you are into handloading. You can make .22-250, .243, and .25-06 from the .30-06 but the .25-06 is the easiest of those three to do.

BarstoolerCan you get a barrel for a 6mm Remington and then have it rechambered to 6mm-06?
You indicated you reload, and essentiall you would have a 240 Weatherby without the belt in a standard action and you could easily make brass from 25-06.
I am leaning to a 6mm-06 as my next build and I already have a 22-250, a 243, and a 25-06. The next best cartridge would be a 6mm Rem AI.
Barstooler
You need all of them.

My thoughts ran along simular lines, exchange the 30-06 for a 6.5 x55

505EDI like the 6.5x55 idea too, 25-06 would work with the mags you have.

NakihunterI thought that the 6.5X55 case head was bigger & needed a larger bolt face???? My Win Mod 70 had a larger bolt face and the extractor broke. I had to import the new extractor with exact rifle serial no as the standard 30 06 bolt face & extractor would not fit.
Just a thought.
