I bought a Blaser R8 barrel from Ross a couple of months ago, and finally got around to installing it on my Blaser to try it out.

Just awesome! Super accurate, doesn't really kick.

Hopefully I can perforate a javelina with it in 20 days.

I love the 7x64, I got to try it in Europe on roe deer. Bang-flop!

Thought it isn't much to ask any rifle cartridge to kill a 65 pound deer at under 200 yards standing still.

I actually owned one years ago an old Tikka 695 or whatever they were called. Never killed anything with it.

Great caliber. I really want a Kimber Mountain Ascent in .280ai.

I have two KMAs in .280ai, have spent a lot of time packing many different rifles in BC since 1964 and I like these about best. I use Talley ss QD mounts and a pair of silver Leupy VX3 3.5x10 scopes each.....very cool rigs.

I get just past 2900 with my non-AI. Near as I can tell, the dead stuff wasn't able to tell the difference between 2900 and 3000 fps. It kicks ass...

I have always found, for both rifles/actions and calibres, what you really like and are attracted to is what will work best. Something might be a more logical and practical choice but if you are lukewarm to it then it will not work that well for you.

So it is with the 280 AI. When it comes to practicality and what can be done then the 270 Win is just so far ahead BUT if you are lukewarm to the 270 and very attracted to the 280 AI then the 280 AI will easily prove to be your best choice.

Good caliber, but Im old school sorta and I still love the 7x57, its treated me so well, its my lucky rifle, and Ive shot lots of stuff with it, both large and small..Couldn't tell much difference in it and the 7MM Rem mag. with my handloads, as a matter of fact, you will experience the same with your 280 Ackley with proper bullets Im sure..

Spot on Charlie, who would hunt with a caliber they did not like under 99% of your experience, I suppose it could and I can only think of one time in my life and that was on a ranch in Mexico wherein the own let me hunt coues and mule deer with his m1 30 carbine..it worked but left some long blood trails with that GI ammo..He had a good dog think goodness...Worst caliber I ever shot and you couldn't give me one..

Exactly, I could not get excited about the 270 Win, but always wanted a 280 AI. That is why I am getting one!! Do I expect it to be significantly better than the 270? Nope. Will a 280 AI float my boat better than the 270? Absolutely!

They’re two cartridges I absolutely hated from appearance the 270 Win and 35 Whelen. I have come to love them after using them.

Do I believe the 338/06 is better balanced than the 35 Whelen in my heart of hearts. Yes, but I am a 35 Whelen convert.

Same with the 270 Win. I see no difference between it and the standard 7mm’s.

Sometimes you just have to try things. Believe it or not there are far fewer cartridges I do not like vs do. The ones I do not like, I have to agree work within an application spectrum.

But better is better! That describes the 280AI.

I never warmed to the '06 but went right to the 300 Win. I have several 270's and they're wonderful but my 280AI is just better with 150-160 grain projectiles and achieves 7mm Rem performance in a std bolt face action. This isn't complicated.
I shot the std 280 for years and loved it but the AI is just a cut above ...but that kind of performance is irrelevant out to a paltry 300 yards. It all depends on where you hunt and what you need from a cartridge

Isn't "choice" a wonderful thing?!?

I also couldn’t get excited about a 270 win. Plus, a 140 grain Accubond at 3150 FPS out of a 280 AI seems better than a 130 grain Accubond at 3075 FPS out of a 270 win.

Hill country rifles recently completed the below 280 AI for me. It shoots half inch groups with factory ammo. I plan to use it for deer, pronghorn, sheep, goats, ibex, and caribou.

I have had two great .280AI's. I have also had two great .280 Rem's. I cannot get worked up about the differences. My two longest shots with these calibers were with the .280 Rem. The AI can be a little more persnickety about feeding out of the magazine.

My favorite hunting load for my 280AI is:
160 Nosler AB 63.0 RL-25 Fed 210 WW 3085 fps.
The 28" Fluted PacNor barrel helps to get the most out of RL-25

Nice looking rifle.

I've never been a fan of the 270. But OK, the 280AI is 75 fps faster, with 10 more grains of bullet. Sorry, but not a BFD.

Yep the 30-06 puts a damper on 99% of the calibers out there, It is the king of the caliber world, just that most folks take 60 or more years to wise up..BTW I would bet dollars to donuts that over the las century the 30-06 killed more DG than any other caliber.. Ive seen it used to cull elephants, and Cape buffalo, not to mention pg such as Eland..and at one time in my youth it was claimed to be the gun for the big Alaskan bear, and the most used according to the gun scribes of yesteryear..All that said Ive personally found it to be as good a caliber as there is for most game and Ive used it spairingly on a buffalo several eland and assisted on a Hippo and it worked.. Still, Id prefer a 375 for such game, like my use of the 7x57, it was basically a stunt that worked, or simply had in hand at the time..but its something to keep in mind, its a confidence builder for sure...Try it before you repeat what youve heard..

Ray, I always love reading your posts!

Wow, over 36,000 posts. How old ARE you anyway?

I love my 280 Rem. I want to love the 280AI as well, but it seems to only produce about 100fps more than the Rem., so I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I've had my eye on the new Ruger African in 280AI, but they made the barrel a larger contour (read heavier) than the previous three: 275 Rigby, 6.5x55, & 9.3x62, and it has put me off.

Maybe someday...

I had a 280 AI + it was a good cartridge however I never saw any greater performance than with my 7X57 AI. Why they make Fords + Chevys I suppose.

I don't think I would think it was so fabulous if I didn't handload.

I am trying to remember who makes them, but I need to find a 280 Ackley hydraulic form die.

The days of throwing away cheap bullets, powder and primers to "fireform" are kind of over.

I have a 1000 rounds of RWS 30-06 brass, and 160 rounds of Nosler 280 Remington brass.

Bullets, primers, and powder are kind of a hot commodity these days.

Funny, but I bought 1 box of 280 Ackley from Federal through my military discount directly and I asked them for a case and they laughed.

Only problem is the ‘06 is boring because it works so well.

BWW, if you want something to kick your ass, You can shoot my 5 lb 280AI titanium rifle shooting 175 grain bullets. It is not comfortable to me shooting it off the bench.

I just went out to my workshop to eyeball the cartridge collection on the shelf above my workbench. Specifically, the 30-06 and 7mm Rem Mag. (I don't have a 280, or 280 AI)

Comparing the two, I gotta think that with the exception of the belt and larger case head the 7mm Mag and 280 AI are virtually twins.

Any perspectives on this comparison?

Big Grin I had a Titanium in .270 Winchester that had a good amount of recoil as well. A gunsmith in Abilene owns it now.

I couldn't imagine shooting one in a .30/06 or larger

My 280 AI wears a heavy 26" 1:8" twist barrel so I can shoot the heavier VLD bullets. It will shoot tiny little bug hole groups with the 168gr Sierra Match Kings as well as the 180gr. Best groups i've shot were .24" back to back 5 shot groups. H4831SC was what I used to do that.

My only wish was I went with a lighter profile barrel so I could hunt with it.
