What scope mounts do you suggest for a old M-70 in a magnum? The scope will be a normal size with a 1" tube. I don't need QD etc but I will listen.

Most of my rifles have very old mounts like the Beuhler, etc. Whats new?

I have uesd and sen so many systems none of them are as good as the weaver style. Many will complain, however they are the best and strongest mounts avalible. If you do not like them look at the Lynx mounts they are a South African design marketed by B square in the US. Do not be fooled by price I have seen too many clients problems with the Redfield style and the warne. When removing the Weaver rings with scope mounted they return to zero as well as the more expensive brands

O the 416rem mag I have QD Talley mounts and they are excellent. On almost all the other rifles I have I use some form of leupold, mostly the QD's. I even use the Leupolds QD's on my 458wm...so far without any problems. If I ever decide to get into the real heavy weights though I'd go with Talley.

A. Jensen, I am in complete agreement with you. I've used the various "Redfield" styles, Warne's, and Leupold QRW's... all I now use are the simple, light and strong Weaver's. All my rifles (I DO mean ALL) are Winchester 70 Stainless' with Weaver stainless mounts/rings and matte black Leupold scopes... doesn't get much better than that for function and form.

Brad

BTW, I always mount Weaver's with the knobs on the bolt side of the rifle... they look better that way and the knobs don't get beat-on when carried with a sling on my right shoulder.

I agree that the Weaver style mounts are the best design. I am ordering a set of Leupold QRW mounts which are supposed to be like the Weaver except they are steel and they have a lever instead of a screw.

A friend showed me his QRW rings and the Weaver aluminum bases that were used with them and soft aluminum got cold formed by the steel bases. I don't know if this was due to because maybe the Leupold QRW lever cannot lock up as tight as the Weaver screw or if it just did not fit right. I am going to use the Leupold steel bases with the QRW rings.

I have never had a Weaver system fail in any way or even get loose in over 30 years! But they are not "fine" looking, thus the Leupold.

Well, I guess I have to agree with everyone else. Weavers are butt ugly, but they sure work. As long as you don't mix steel and aluminium, they work great. For looks, I think Conetrol. - Dan

I'll have to go with Dan.

Weavers are butt ugly. They are also hard to get the crosshairs level.

However, they stay put, which is what counts in the long run.

If I want purty mounts I use Leopold.

Don, I've had about five or six pairs of Leupold QRW's... the first few sets had to go back to Leupold because a ham-fisted assmbly person (they're made by Warne for Leupold) cross-threaded the ring screws. Because the ring screws are at a 45 degree angle, it's very easy to cross-thread them. Also, because those screws are at an angle and below center, when the two halves are tightened, the top ring half really "bites" into the scope tube... several of my scopes were really mauled by them... I was very pissed. Leupold wouldn't do anything about it. Also, if weight matters to you, the QRW's are twice the weight (and price) of plain-jane Weaver's... I'd never mount QRW's on another rifle nor reccomend them to anyone. They're great in theory, but a POS... in my experience.

Best Regards,

Brad

Brad,

You have me concerned! I noticed that the scope this guy has was all gouged up! Thanks for the heads up.

I think I am going to try to cancel the order tommorrow morning. I can use the Weavers for now.

Don, if this was a "marginal" issue to me I wouldn't speak up. However, I just want to save you the grief I went through! Hope I didn't inconvenience you too much... still, there are much better ring options available.

Graf accepted the cancellation. I will use Weaver for now. They work just right and I have a drawer full of them. I need to look at more mounts in person but I also what to know what the memebers here like.

Brad,

What mounts do you favor now?

Don, all my rifles are plain-jane utility pieces (stainless 70's) so the Weaver's are just fine. For a nicer piece (blued-walnut) I'd take a hard look at Talley's or Conetrol's.

Except for one set of Talley QD's on a .375 H&H, I'm buying nothing but Leupold Dual Dovetails. In fact I have even replaced a couple sets of perfectly serviceable older "Redfield Jr" types with the windage adjustable base in favor of the newer Dual Dovetails.

Considerations - the mount holes have to be lined up with the barrel properly. You have to be careful that both rings are lined up 90 degrees from bore axis to make sure you are not stressing your scope.

Benefits - Strong as can be and simple. Once set up, they ain't moving! Also very clean lines and nice looking.

To the original post - up until very recently I don't think Leupold made them for the M70 magnum action which has the non-standard rear hold spacing. But I think that they are now available.

I'm very surprised that Burris has not been mentioned, I tried a set of Burris Signature rings and mounts about a year ago and have since put them on my rifles, so far they have held fine, easy to mount a scope in, and havn't mared any of the scopes I have tookin off allthough I will admitt that the biggest caliber I have them on is 300WinMag but so far so good.

The Weavers do hold like a pit bull but they are a pain to mount a scope in for me, besides I had them on a factory wood stocked Savage 110 and that was just to much ugly for one rifle.

For use on light to medium recoil rifles any of the Leupold, Burris, Weaver style mounts work fine. For heavy recoil rifles and any other rifle you care to put them on the Talley scope mount system is hard to beat.

I just bought my first Leupold PRW (permanent rings weaver), and they are something you guys should take a look at. Simple, and solid. They sure are nice. The only bad part is that my "low" rings are high enough to accept 40 mm scopes, and I wanted something for a 32 mm objective.

What would you guys use for the lowest possible Weaver style rings? TIA, Dutch.

Can somebody tell me more about the Talley rings? I've had Leupolds on all of my rifles and don't like them. They don't fit well and they garf the scopes. Weaver is of no interest to me, because I hunt in the arctic at -40 and travel with my gear in the back of a tobaggan up to 200 miles out. Might just be me, but aluminum and the conditions I'm in, makes me a little gun-shy. I need something solid as a rock and I don't care how much it cost as long as it works.

What about Weaver bases and Millet rings? Lots of windage adjustment built in and the rings look like rings, not steel strapping. I have used this combo on a number of rifles and never had a problem.

I have settled on the Weaver bases and the Burris Signature Zee rings. I have tried just about all the different brands mentioned and I feel most comfortable with the Weaver bases and Burris rings. Weaver has steel bases now; they call them Grand Slam bases. I like that combination with the steel Burris rings. A solid combination for me.

Weavers are strong as heck and hold their zero. But, they are a pain to get the reticle level and I don't like the sharp edges. The Weaver Sure Grip model should eliminate the reticle leveling problem, but have more sharp edges.

The easiest I've found to mount are the Burris "Zee" on Weaver bases. They also work fine but I imagine it would be hard to take the scope on/off since the rings fit very tightly to the bases.

Most recently I decided to try the Warne Maxima -- the model for permanent mounting on Weaver rings. They seem strong but you do need an extra set of hands. And you MUST tighten the bottom screws first or they will slide on the bases.

Where the hell can you find some information on Weaver Grand Slam bases ? I have seen at least a dozen people mention them yet there is nothing on Weaver's website that I can find or any listings by any of the usual suppliers like Midway , etc. ?

Only 3 of my rifles wear optics.

Two have Badger Ordnance 20 moa base and 30mm rings. (Rem 700 .308, Rem 700 30-06)
I like these because they are the toughest I have seen. Here is what they are if anyone is unfamiliar with them.

One has Leupold two piece base with Leupold rings. (Browning A-Bolt .338 WinMag) I like these because they are reasonably strong, and have graceful appearance.

I've got Talleys on my 375M70, Leupold dual dove tails on my lesser calibers, and the ruger rings on the rugers. I also have some weavers on a couple of 223's. From now on I think I'll just buy the Talleys and the dual dovetails.

Thankyou guys for the info . Still no pictures to be found so I'm guessing the bases are identical to the aluminum ones, just of steel construction instead ?

Also , are the Grand Slam rings of the same design as the old top mounts or ????

The Leupold DD's work very, very well for me

Interested to hear about the Leupold QRW's, I was looking to buy a set for my 375, I think I'll skip and get the ordinary QR's.

Talking about POS, the SAKO rings for their rifles are over complicated, soft and the whole alignment system (4 screws per ring, plus windage adjustment) sucks. I am keen to mill off the top and go with a screw system.

The other POS, but not as bad as the SAKO is the Lynx/Tasco system. Too complicated.

Cheers

I have changed the Leupold QRW rings on one rifle to Talley's because the QRWs had a cross bolt with a round cross-section and they have been known to peen the square cross-section slots on some alloy mounts.

Since that time, Leupold has developed a bolt with a square cross-section as well.

I have a set of Beuhler bases and 30mm rings that were on my pre-64 M70 .375 H&H.

The rear base has been machined to improve appearance and clearance. All are in good shape.

Let me know if you are interested. No sense having them sit around in my parts drawer if you can use them.

This is an old thread but nothing wrong with the topic. I would like some additional opinions. I'm shocked at the support for Weaver mounts. They are the cheapest, ugliest, hardest to level rings I've ever seen. I'll have to be missing meals from poverty before I would buy any. Strong? maybe - I don't know.

Doesn't anyone have any experience with S & K Mounts or Conetrol? I have S&K's on 3 Winchesters and absolutely love them. They are steel but light weight. Does anyone know of any problems with them? I just can't figure out why they aren't popular.

Conetrols are great, also, but just a little tricky and difficult to get reticles aligned. Once you get there, they look great and are also lightweight. Anyone hear of problems with them? I've had none, but I'm shooting 30/06 or less in all my rifles.

I'm considering the Talleys. Are they heavy? Anyone know what they weight? Scope mounts should weigh nothing. No rifle needs additional weight in the middle. If anyone designs mounts that weigh nothing - I'm buying!

Mike, I just got some Talley QD's and I am suprised at how heavy they are. Cannot give you hard numbers on the weight but they are more than I thought they'd be for sure!
I am going to get a set of Lynx rings from a friend and see how they work. If they are a no show, then I might try the Burris CZ 550s.
