It would be nice to see reports on several widely used cartridges with the new Reloder 16. Please give details on 270, 30-06, 300's, 338WM, even 243, just to name a few. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

I have been using it lately with the 30-06. 58 grains and 150 Sierras, Swift Sciroccos, Speer Grand Slams, etc... 57 grains with 168 grain CTBT, 56 grains with 180 grain Partition. 55 grains with 180 Swift A-frame.

Here is a review that tests claims about Reloder 16 and temperature. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.c...eview-alliant-rl-16/ The data is impressive. I think I want a couple of cans. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Several guys on the 6.5Creedmoor.com forum are using RL 16 and having great success with it. Myself, I'm not concerned how a powder will act at 100°F , but rather how it will act at -40° . H 4350 and Varget work very good in the cold. I have had better success with RL 17 @ 30 below than I anticipated. So will prolly try RL 16 . good thread. Glen. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

Lots of new powders out there, lots of salesmanship to go with them, but have any of you noticed the recalls or warnings that follow, the latest being one two of the new IMR powders, that were harolded in the magazines, then came the pressure spikes, and the industry claims exposed? Its a bit concerning as to the pitfalls..One thing Im pretty sure of its always a good idea to use the powders that have passed the test of time. Im pretty satisfied with RL-17 right now, but turned out to be just more of the same as RL-15 which is a proven powder and only trailing behind RL-17 by about 50 to 75 FPS in some calibers, less in others in the real world and that ain't much, and is almost disappointing, but not a complete failure I suppose. I really fell in love with CFE223, got some awesome velocity in the 30-30, 25-35 and 250 Savage but no better than H414 and at much higher pressure!! The approach to the new powders by the powder companies is akin to the advertisement of a new production rifle caliber, they Harold it with velocity figures that blow you away in the beginning then quietly cut back, as the reviews come in, ala the factory .458 Win. This stuff has been going on for years. rolleyes: My point being arguable therefore my approach is just be aware. Exactly. Which is why the review above is valuable. It was testing temperature and it was independent of the powder company. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

ABSOLUTLY... My tests with RL-17 show it to be the best powder in the 9.3x62 hands down, but not my much, about 50 to 75 FPS, to a purest that may be significant, but in the real world it ain't much punkin!!but better than nothing, with heavy bullets I found it somewhat of an improvement. The consistency of Reloder 16 was pretty impressive in that round of testing.

Correct me if Im wrong but RL-16 should have a burn rate about like IMR-4064 or 4320 both of which work well in a 9.3x64, correct??? Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

Actually, it is supposed to be like 4350 and less sensitive to temperature. It will be almost like R-17, though will a slightly different, minutely faster, burning curve. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

In a .270 Win I have found R22 to be the go-to powder...

Speer has published reloading data that has some of the new powders for most cartridges. I see a very fast .35 Whelen load with a 250-grain on Alliant Pro 2000 a little over 2700 fps, and an even faster 250-grain load for the .338WM with Reloader 26. https://www.speer-ammo.com/en/reloading/rifle

I have never shot a 9.3 | |||

9.3 should have a reasonable 30#'s of recoil. I would like to get nostalgic and shoot a plains Bison with a 9.3!

Ray, Have you ever worked up hotloads for the 9.3? Chrono?

Corey, I have worked up hot loads for about every caliber imaginable, and have been thoroughly scorned about such practice, but Im still around and healthy, never blown a gun up or even damaged one..I know how to do it and I know when to quit... I have a reason for such madness, I feel I need to know were true max is with every gun I own, then when I'm satisfied with that I cut back a few grains and find my most accurate load...I know a number of gun nuts of some fame that do the same, but I don't recommend it to anyone else nor do I share those hottest loads with anyone. in fact I seldom quote loads for that matter, just on occasions I might share a accurate load.
