I am hung between the 300 rum or the 7wsm what do yall think? My max shot is 350 to 400 at the very end of the river bottom.I shoot a ruger 243 heavy barrel it is goode but on the new land I got I want more nock down power any help would be great.

I own two 300rums and only use them for elk and moose hunting as they are much more powerful than necessary for deer.The 7mmwsm would be a good choice but for the smaller southern deer even the 25-06 would offer plenty of power.

My vote would also go w/ the 7WSM/150gr bullets. Save the .300RUM for bigger game, unless you just got to have one.

well if its between the 300 rum and the 7wsm... it must be a 270 winchester! Thats my choice

I for myself- being that I have hunted this area
used a 30-06 with 180gr ammo
had no problems with knock down power -

I took a Whitetail @ 542 paces using the below Ammo-in lots of open country

No jay... the 7 is in the middle on a 270 .

Honestly... the 270 has always been a real sleeper for me. When I was a boy in AK I took my first moose with a 270. Its got the velo to be a magnum without the magnum name. I still hunt with a 300 but, less. If I think the 270 is outta place 9 times out of 10 I will feel out of place with a 300 and just go strait to my 375.

I own a 300 rum and just bought a 270 WSM. They both have benifts. Question is will you ever get the chance to hunt larger game?? For a one gun deal the Rum would work fine, if is a bit large for close shots on deer but you are not under gunned for just about all North America game. Buy them both The Rum is hard on barrels if you plan on doing a fair amount of bench shooting. 1500 shots would more than likely show serious degrading of accuracy

The 300ultramag is by no means a good cartridge for a one gun owner.The main advantage it offers is very flat trajectory that is most useful for long range shooting by people with much better than average shooting skills.To utilize that advantage you need to practise a great deal to develop and maintain the necessary long range shooting skills.Since barrel life is 1500 rounds or less a lot of practise will result in rebarreling on a regular basis.As well recoil is quite stiff which makes it uncomfortable for many people to practise with it.Many people that don't shoot often develop flinches from the recoil.I own two 300 ultramags and am very happy with them but I have several other rifles that I do most of my practising with.

If you're going to toss in the 270 Win, then you might as well get the 270 WSM. More power.

These guys will get you into trouble, what you need is a 7mm STW. That way you wont feel undergunned against them life threatening whitetail attacks from 700 yds.
