Gentlepeople: Please see the following link regarding the rifle I am putting together for my son. https://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3221043/m/706108626 I have a question regarding which bullet weight to use to regulate the open sights with. First, although this is for my son, this rifle is not meant to be a "youth model." This will be his forever rifle, probably used for N. American big game. So I am not worried about recoil for a young man. First, I plan on using Barnes TSX bullets in this gun as I am a big fan of them. So here is my question: 577NitroExpress Double Rifle Shooters Society Francotte .470 Nitro Express If stupidity hurt, a lot of people would be walking around screaming...

165 Reasons....... 1. Good all around bullet weight. 2. Available lots of places...but so is the 180.....hmmmmmmmm. 3. Cause I said so??? hehehe.....

I chose the "other." Meaning the 168. Yes it's close to the 165, but I didn't know if you were lumping them together or not. I've loaded several of the various bullet wts for my .06 and the 168 TSX shoots 0.4 groups in my Pacnor barreled 700 using H4350. A 168 TSX will do ANYthing a 180 partition or aframe or failsafe or trophy bonded bear claw will do. I was shocked at how little time it took to get the 168TSX to shoot and shoot well. Good luck. I've always preferred the 200 gr. Nosler Partition for the '06, so that's what I would use, and why I picked "other". If I was going to use a TSX, I'd probably go with the 180, though any of them will likely do a good job. I just happen to like heavier bullets at somewhat slower velocities, but everyone gets their own mileage from their own rifle, so there is probably NO wrong answer here as long as a person stays away from the 110-grainers <Grin>. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

I chose other. You could make all three regulate with enough trial. With the amount of bullets and powders avalible for the 30/06. You can find one of each to make it work. LLB

I picked 165 (though 168 would be just as good). I thought about 150 grains, since I think the TSX at 150 grains will kill anything up to great bears, and is a little flatter shooting. But the velocity penalty for the 168 grain TSX is minimal (compared to a much steeper drop for the 180 grain bullets), and I'd be marginally more comfortable shooting an elk, moose, wildebeest, oryx, or other large, tough animal with a 168 gr TSX. And I wouldn't be that worried shooting a great bear if I had to. Steve

I'd regulate a single leaf rear sight for 180 grain factory loaded cup and core ammunition. The rear aperture on my 1903 pseudoscout is set for Remington CoreLokts.

I've used a 30-06 for 25 years and I've tried everything with it. At the end of the day I always come back to 180 gr. They simply seem fly true. The higher BC makes up for drease in velocity. They hit harder and stay together better. Like I said I wanted others to work better but they simply didn't.

IMHO I would go with the 180 gr. Any time you use iron sights on an '06 you will be close and most likely shooting in heavy cover, ie raking shots. Also for BIG big game the 180 is best. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

I have owned a Tikka 30-06 for many years. I have found that the best all round bullet weight has been 165 . Supposedly this is also the bullet with the best co-efficient for the '06 cartridge. I have found the Nosler 165 ballistic tipped to be extremely accurate. the nut behind the butt

For open sights I would go with a 200g Partition. ****************************************************************** R. With open sights I'd go with the 150 gr bullet. Thats what I first shot in my 30/06 with open sights to sight it in.
