Thank you Dogleg for your support.I realized a long time ago that brass would be problem, so stocked up on Rem Safari ammo ordered 100 Remington cases. I have several varieties of good hunting bullets, primers, but reloder22 is hard to find. Sorry, did not mean to hijack this thread, but I stand on my original premise, the 8mm needs to stay alive and be rscognized as the fine round it is. Respectfully, Jerry Hoover

If you go 8mm-06, just go with an Ackley Improved version.

With either Vv N550 or Alliant RL-17 you can get close to 2900fps W/a 200gr bullet W/O going beyond 270 Win pressure levels.

A Featherweight in .358 Winchester or maybe now the .338 Federal for a handy woods thumper.

I have shot the most game with my .358's. A Savage 99F is mine! Now I have them in other rifles as well.

The 99 and the Steyr at the bottom are .358's!

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

What the hell, I'll be different. I vote for the .333 Jeffrey because it's unique and you need something unique in your repertoire, and because it's sexy and classic. You really don't NEED anything in between.

There is no gap between a 300 mag and 35 Whelan so I'm voting other (a 375 AI / Weatherby would be a great choice.

Time to step up!

Chuck

8x57 or 8x60, although I don't think that there is a gap you need to be worried about.

All the "metric-wrench sizes" make things too complicated and store ammo is quite difficult to find. I would keep it simple and be done with that:

Given you have big and fast already, and you are after whitetail does, I would seriously look at the .338 Federal, especially in a lightweight rifle to fill the .33 bore hole.

I voted "something else". In a custom or second hand I'd go 358 Norma Mag. In a Factory 338 Win Mag.

The 338 Win Mag is the natural choice. Great bullet choices. If for Africa then the 375 Ruger is the new default.

Something else as in a 25/06 or 270. Fun to shoot and hunt with. Very user friendly. If you have to go big get a .458.

Another vote for the 318 Westley Richards.

"...I advise the gun. While this gives a moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprize, and independance to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks." 338 Win Mag. Available in a wide variety of rifles, great availability of reloading components and if you are hunting Alaska, you won't have any trouble finding a box of factory loads if you somehow manage to either forget your own ammo or the airlines lose it.

What have you settled on?

Nothing yet. However, my gunsmith started on my 404 Jeffery. It'll be finished in March.

338/06
I love mine!! Great bullet selection, headstamped brass is readily available if needed. If not, 30/06 brass is CHEAP!! Some factory ammo out there too. Mine shoots very well with several different powders. Any shot I would take with a 338WM, I would take with a 338/06. And lastly, it has a high degree of cool factor.

30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.
