Never had a barrel rebore done before but this old Mauser was a 7x57 smooth bore. Very impressed with the results and have to thank Jim Kobe for his recommendations and work to bring this old piece back to life. That's shots number 5,6, and 7 after the rebarrel with Sellier and Bellot 196 grain soft points.

it's a "cigarette gun" period correct scope, though -- i have basically the same rifle, sans scope, and have seriously considered stupid money to get one to match properly ... mine WAS in 270, and, in theory, it's now in 10,75x64

It is from a culture that allows night hunting and that is why the huge objective lens. Here we consider it unsporting. And we also balk at the notion that the game belongs to the land owner and not the state, a relic of feudal rule. It is what it is; different evolution of rights and ownership.

I'm old enough that if someone likes it, then good for them. At least they are happy and the rifle is getting used. Sure, I have my own preferences, but I realize that they are mine, and not necessarily shared by others. It's a big world.

Me, I'd shoot the hell out of that rifle and kill lotsa hogs with it!

I've got a similar rifle, octagon barrel in 8x57. Bore isn't as nice as I'd like. been thinking of having it rebored cuz I like the rifle as is. Wish we could do rebores in reverse. I'd love a 7x64 or 6.5x55 on it. May just have to settle for yet another 9,3x62.

I got tired of trying to sell m Brno mod 21 in 8x60, so had it rechambered to a 8mm/06 Ackley IMP, and Im very pleased wit it on deer and elk, its besting the 338/o6 and walking on the heels of my 338 Win. and that's close enough for guvment work!! old I also have a sorta vintage scope on it and it looks slicker n snot! a Leupold 2.5X Alaskan, got all the attributes of a Lyman Alaskan, but its got the centered reticle..some don't care for centered reticales but I think they are the best thing since sliced white bread..

This gun also has a 4x Zeiss Dialyt scope that is of the period (1940). As someone already responded, the 8x Kahles was intended for night or low light conditions.

Sellier&Bellot 196gr SP bullets are poor man choice. Will it kill the game? Yes, of course, but fragmentation is huge. Personally I will never use again. I reload for 8x57JS (8mm Mauser), but Norma Oryx bullets, which are bonded with very best weight retention.

I really like the gun itself, but Im sour on big scopes, they are clumsy, ruin the balance of a gun, too powerful for hunting big game..Id love the gun with a 3X Leupold with the claw mounts and low rings, that's fit for a 7x57 or any 30-06 based cartridge IMO..I like set triggers for running shots on game, but I think a Blackburn,or even a Timney is probably better in the long run..

Ray:

It is just European style for hunting at the dusk or in the night. Sleek rifle, huge front ring and small diameter tube make it visually even bigger and inappropriate.

But now, you can see old classic rifles equipped with huge night visions or thermal sights here. Looks much worse than that old style front mounted scope.

Maybe this scope looks more appropriate Smiler

Still nice and bright even if it shows its age.

It ain't considered sportin' to kill a deer with double ought buck here in the Ozarks....but it is in Alabama. Whatcha got depends on where ya are.

I don't care for the large objective scopes either, though you are seeing more and more of them stateside. However, were I night hunting hogs in Saxony I'd probably have one.
