Interesting New Rifle

scottfromdallasInteresting New Rifle
Looks like a inexpensive little thumper. Would be perfect if offered in a 338 Fed or 358 win, although 308 Win is a very logical choice.

surestrikeThye offer that little gy in a 20" .338 WM. That is a HUGE mistake the .338 does not like 20" tubes. I've tried it. Now that same rifle in .375H&H with a 20" tube would work.
As it is the only caliber that makes sense for hogs is the .308.

KabluewyGood idea.

Factory offerings - now that I've got one finished Ruger 308 with a 20" barrel & Hogue stock , and three others mostly finished, each with 20" barrel. Two 308s - one on a Mauser action, another in a CZ 550, and one 8x57 on a CZ 550. I had them all made as the ultimate in truck rifles, especially suitable for hog hunting and other pursuits, whether from a truck, a stand or walking about,
The 8x57 was sort of an afterthought, but I think it's gonna be the best of the bunch.
What's really interesting about the Savage is the threaded barrel. Apparantly threaded for a suppressor. What does that mean in regard to the use of suppressors, particularly for hog hunting? Has such use increased to the point where there is a market for pre-threaded barrels?

Bingo
But the short barrels will make the suppressors not work as well minus the 223. Adding the length of the suppressor not so much a compact rifle anymore.
The 308 looks good. The 338 would be a flame thrower. The 223 with the threaded barrel is the most interesting.

For what, gophers or stray cats in Urbania?

The stinkin Savage, in 223, has only a 1 in 9" twist rate = varmint bullets.
The 338 is gonna NEED a suppressor.

A 338 Lapua suppressor ought to work.

Jeff SullivanThe orange camo in 9.3x62 would be a nice gun!!!

The 40 grain raptor should be good for hogs and deer.

KabluewyJust cuttin up with you Boomie.

Yea, the 9.3 is a better choice in a 20" barrel than the 338WM. But I suspect they made their decisions around the more readily available cans. The 338WM with a titanium can would be tamed right down, yet a vicious hog slayer. It needs a 12" twist, and shoot TTSX 210gr bullets. Visualizing that - I think it's a bit more gun than needed for hogs.
IMO, the perfect hog slayer rifle is a Mauser or CZ 550 carbine in 8x57, with a 20" barrel. But for such use, it's hard to ignore or find something to not like about a 308. I normally don't consider the 308 for a Mauser action, but I had one that will feed practically anything with a case head same size as 8x57. It feeds the 308 so well, that I decided to rebarrel it in 308. I've had it with a short 35 Whelen barrel on it for many years, and just don't use it. Maybe with the 308, it will get more use. I bought a Shilen barrel on sale, which helped to justify the switch.

boom stickThe 358 Win would be better than the 9,3x62. But yes the 9,3x62 is the better 20" hog option than the 308 or 338

Lol
I was thinking in terms of case capacity to bore diameter/barrel length ratio.
Add a silencer to the 358 win 20" barrel and you have something pretty cool.

AtkinsonOne of the few plastic stocked guns I have seen that I would like..It would be nice in a .308 Win. or even a 223, both good calibers.
Except for certain use I want my 9.3x62s to have a 24 or even 26 inch barrel, you need all the velocity you can get to make those wonderful 320 gr. Woodleighs work on cape buffalo, but hogs at a 100 yards would work, but so will the 223 or 308 on hogs. Get much bigger than that and that little gun would probably push you around..

OldsargeI can't believe anyone posted here that they thought a .308 wasn't sufficient for hogs. Puh-leeze!

Yep, I guess everyone would make fun of me for shooting a 243.

I'd eithe lop it off and recrown or have it turned down. Then pull the rear sight and install an XS ghost ring. I'd add a longer SSS or Stockade tac bolt handle so it is easier to grab and work the bolt as well. Should make a pretty handy rifle then.

KabluewyIf you wannabee real tacticool, buy a Ruger Gunsite, which has a DBM that holds lots of 308 rounds.
