The Sako 85 .300 Win. Mag. has a long magazine and generous throat length. Longer bullets like the Barnes 180gr T-TSX can be seated without taking up case capacity -

The .300 Win. Mag. is criticized for having a short case neck. The result is that heavier and longer bullets need to be seated deeply into the case in most rifles in order for the rounds to fit in the magazine.

The deeper seating depth takes up case capacity thereby reducing powder volume. My Sako 85 is the exception because it has a long magazine and generous throat length.

My 700s in .300 Win also have a long mag box - a nice feature. My Ruger 77 .300 had a relatively short box. It's gone. Have two 700s in .300 WBY and two in .300 Win. Have never seen any difference in terminal effectiveness. Placement and bullet selection are 99% of it.

.300s are more than adequate for deer, but they do/will work on anything I'll ever pursue. Keeps things simple.

I can understand that.
Have used them (300 Win and Weatherby), and taken animals with both of them, but never owned one myself.

the 300 win mag is enough for those long shots.
it was killing stuff before the ultra and weatherby come along.
human nature is always to want more, better, faster, sooner.
the 300 win mag is good enough.
I don't even shoot anything that big [heck I don't even shoot a 270] and i do just fine in the wide open western united states, where I live.
out here if we think we need to shoot at stuff really far away we skip the 30 caliber stuff and go straight to the 338 lapua, the 408 chey-tac or the 50 bmg.
I have never felt the need to hunt things 600-900 yds away.
I just go ahead and walk the extra 300 yds closer before pulling the trigger.
if I had a 300 and was faced with a 350 yd shot at a 1200 pound elk I wouldn't worry about the rifle getting the job done.

A lot of us like the 270 and 30-06, I personally prefer the 30-06..but the 300 Winchester, 300 H&H and 300 WBY are the ultimate in practical hunting rifles IMO, they do have a definite advantage way out yonder and they do shoot a LITTLE flatter and arrive at the target a bit harder. I can't think of a better long range rifle than any one of those 300s mentioned with a 200 gr. Nosler partition.

That said, I use a .338 but I also don't take shots past 400 yards if that. I like to do my hunting before I shoot..I personally feel there are two many shooters these days and too few hunters.

I agree with you, for me, hunting is as close as possible to the piece to abate but agree with me that there are grounds where this approach is not possible and must make long shots. In such circumstances as these 300s cartridges are needed.

Totally agree with you, I am now immersed in saving for a good viewer for the Remington 700 I have the 338 Winchester Magnum but some hunting if I attend. Regards, Oscar

I concur with your assessment 100%, the 300s are king of the hill for long range shooting..I personally prefer the old 300 H&H with a handloaded 200 gr. Nosler at 3020 FPS.., its absolutely a killing machine and I have hunted the world with it..The newer 300 RUMs etc. are the ultimate but I dislike the recoil, muzzle blast, and they are just too damn heavy. Today I seldom use anything but the 308 or 30-06 and my favorite gun is my Sav. 99 takedown, 250-3000.

Hi, I have put one scope in my Santa Barbara in 300 Winchester Magnum. It's a Burris Fullfield II in 3-9x40 with mounts and rings Warne Maxima QD. Now I have to put the rifle shot. One pic.

Well a 338 and a 7 mag is more than suitable for whatever one hunts, short of elephant and Hippo IMO. If you intend to hunt Africa then you should opt for a 7 mag and 375 or 416 IMO..at least it would be the wise thing to do.
