Got that right! My all time favorite hunting cartridge is the .270 Win. I've killed a lot of game with my PH 1200 rifle in that chambering, both close up and and way out there at the edge of my capabilities. I've never found it lacking, even though I've killed the most elk with that rifle I've retired it from hunting elk for now. I've probably been working with the .30 cals the most lately for medium bores. .300 H&H, .30-06, .30-40 and I'm even thinking of building a .300 Savage. I've got the brass, dies, barrel, and small ring action. Just need to find a stock and I'd be up and running with that one. Who know next year I might start really plaing with my 8-06, 338-06, .358 Win, or .35 Whelen.

One of my favorite cailbers and the two rifles I have stocked and that are chambered for it is my 7mm A&T Magnum, This cartridge from a rifle with a 25" barrel is produce 3300fps. This isn't guess work; theis is from my Oehler Chronogaph. My second is the .280 Remington.

Tough call ... I'd be forced to choose between the 308Win and a 35cal. In 35cal the 358Win edges out the 35Whelen and 350RemMag. Just in case I'm totally wrong though .. considering trying a 300H&H. Cheers... Con

It really depends on where and for what, I am hunting. 9.3x57 286gr for the woods here in NH, good for 150 yards w/ open sights for Whitetail and Bear. 6.5x55 129gr for open pastures. 8x57 160..180gr to change it up a little. 8x57 was my 1st true love and it has stuck over the years. All 3 in Husqvarna hunters.

My favorite calibers for all things in N. America are the 270 win and the 350 rem, then the 300 wsm. I do like many others as well. I like the 350 a lot but not in a barrel less than 22". Muzzle blast seems to affect me more than recoil.

I'm surprised at how few people picked the 300 magnums. Wherever I hunt it always seems like half the people there are using one or the other of them.

Favorite for what? For varminting, a 22/250. For anything up to and possibly including elk, a .270. For one rifle for everything in North America and most of the rest of the world, a 30-06. For something somewhat more powerful than a 30-06 for elk and everything larger except the largest dangerous game, a .300 Weatherby. For dangerous game, a .375 Holland and Holland, or, if you can shoot it well, a .375 RUM. (If you can shoot it, a .416 -- Remington or Rigby or Weatherby -- would be better, but it is less versatile than the .375 H&H.) "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

My favourite calibers for hunting deer and larger game are 7mm08 300 mag (I need to get one - a Mauser in 300 H&H!) 9.3X62 - my Simson M98 I would like to own a 404 Jeffery & a 450 / 400 double rifle. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

7mm-08 I have gotten two whitetail , a javelina , a warthog , a blue wilderbeest , a black wilderbeest , a red hartebeest , and a oryx with one shot. I have a muzzle break and it doesn't kick very much.

The 300 WM is a great "Go To" caliber for many hunts, from Mulies to Whitetail to Elk. Accurate, great power/recoil ratio, moderate gun weight, and easy to get ammunition anywhere.

Is there anything other than a.340 Weatherby.

Without a doubt number one is a handloaded 7x57 Mauser. the second would be a lot harder in my case. The no. 1 was easy as it is my mainstay as a game killer. A shot not taken is always a miss

Biebs I'll bet if we limited the responses to people that actually do a lot of hunting all over the place the 300 magnums would come in first. I sure see a lot of them out hunting, not neccesarily at the range.

Anything 9.3! I have the 9.3x62, 64, and 74R. They have all been hunted hard and performed perfectly Then it would have to be the .30-06. Because it just plain gets the job done! ______________________ Guns are like parachutes. I don't have a single favorite. Rimfire: 22LR of course. Centerfire Varmit: 22-250 Centerfire Light: 257 Roberts Centerfire Medium: 35 Whelen Centerfire Large: 45-70 Blackpowder: 50cal These are of course subject to change if I find something I like better, such as a wildcat WSM (.35 or .375) or something like that.

My choice would be my .300 Win Mag. I go from a .243 to the .300 and find that work's out great.

280 Remington and a 338 Win Mag will stop all charging ground squirrels and anything else in North America. ******************************* Only Accurate rifles are interesting.

I truly enjoy shooting and reloading for the 7x57 and the .405 Win. To shoot guns with so much history makes pulling the trigger that much more enjoyable.

Now that I have been able to take my rebuilt 7mm08 to the range I have to second my vote for this. Greg Tannel built another great rifle for me. The old rifle shot good but always a pain to get the copper out. The new Krieger barrel SS cleans up really fast and I was surprised by getting a lot more speed from the same load as the other one. The old load with Barnes TSXs in 140 gr went 2840 with 44.5 gr of Varget. The new one goes 2915 with the same load. That was a very nice surprise.

30-378 Weatherby. I must be the only one on here who claims her. I've since retired the 7 mags, 338 mag, 270's, and all my other hunting guns with the exception of AR's off the snowmachine come winter. I got a used one with Macmillan stock and going to find an accumark sooner or later.
