I picked one of these up and looks ok but not nearly as nice as the same model I got for my son 12 years ago which is also a tack driver. I do dislike the new detachable magazine but I want to have this as a farm and ranch gun.

What do you think of the gun? Yet to shoot it and wondering what bullets you use either factory or hand loads in the 139-140 range.

Hand loading for my son's gun is the 140 gr Nosler BT. I used to shoot the nosler with the led tip before they went to the new polymer tip.

In my 7 mag and 270 the 150 Nosler BT's do ok but had a couple of lung shots where the deer went down after running but there was very little blood trail at 225 and 270 yard shots both Nos 150 BT seemed to deflect down and not blow a hole thru the deer.

Did some culling this weekend with the same 7 mag and load and everything died but the Axis buck at 130 yard went down but the bullet debonded completely laying against the skin on the far side.

Have you found a better bullet in the 140 grain for hand loading this 7mm 08 for deer and hogs?

Have you found a cheap commercial 140 gr load that works for you when you do not have time to reload.

How has the Nikon scope and rings worked for you out of the box?

Thanks, Jim

RE: 7-08 loads I like the 140 gr Nosler partition soft point. It shoots well in my Sako 85S - as well as several other bullets that I have tried for grouping and velocity. It's what I use for deer. I'll use the 7-08 with 160 grains for general season elk, which limits me to "spike". If I get drawn for a branch antler elk I'll use a 338.

RE: the Savage rifle. I don't own one, but the game department uses rifles for their hunter education courses, for which I'm an instructor. The rifles of recent purchase have been Savage bolt action variation of Model 110s and Ruger Americans. Both are well made for the price but the Savage is confusing with which lever is the bolt release and how to remove/replace the bolt. However I much prefer it to the plastic magazine latch on the Ruger.

try the Hornady 139gr interlock.
I use it in the faster 7x57 Ackley, and in the daughters slightly slower 7 mauser.
it has done nothing spectacular it just goes in expands and exits on everything from coyotes through elk.
2700-2850 is enough muzzle velocity to keep it reliable from 25 out to 250 yds.

I bought my girlfriend the same gun with youth stock in 308.

It shoots Fed NM into a 1/2 inch at 100 yards.

I actually like the detachable box.

"Sweetie, remove the magazine open the bolt" I now know the gun is safe.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

This is one of my favorite truck guns/caliber, especially in stainless --

139 hornady are great bullets, varget, benchmark, h335/tac are good powders for this ...

i am having some nostalgia for your situation, as I was loading 7mag and 708 (in the same model you have) and was having TERRIBLE bullet failures in the 7mag with BTs .. but, this being 20 years ago, i was (and am) a bit harsh on the BTs, but when then detonate on contact within 100 yards, and I have to dig into south texas brush to finish up the pigs a friend shot .. well,,,

the other friend that had the 708 with 139s ... i kept telling him pigs have TWO eyes, and there are usually BLACK .. please stop shooting them in the single brown eye ... but the 139s would generally make it to the vitals and exit ...

pretty lame "test" between bullets, but the results were repeated several to many times -- the 7mag guy loved the BT loads, the 708 loved the 139s ..

sigh -- i need to call those guys

They are accurate I really don't like their extractor system.

I have had them come out and lose them I keep spares around.

I had more failures to extract with savage rifles then any other.

But that might be due to the fact that they are my varmint rifles and 10s of thousands have been fired in them.

The 7mm-08 is a very useful cartridge.
