The data is helpful but was apparently shot in a rifle with a very tight chamber or a faster batch of R-17. Two different 338's of mine, one Ruger and one Tikka, preferred 69 grains of R17 for the aforementioned 2830 fps with 225 TTSX. A third 338 with a largish chamber liked 70/70.5 gn R-17 with the 225 TTSX, again for 2825-2840fps. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

Thank you 416 . Thats good to know. From your results it defiantly appears it was a tight chamber. How was RL 17 for accuracy. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

I've found accuracy of R-17 to be excellent in the cartridges that I use it for: 270Win 338WM 375Ruger 416Rigby The one question that can't be answered is what will its stability be like in 30-40 years as a double base powder sometimes sitting it hot places? I suspect that it will be fine since its retardant properties are supposed to be throughout the powder and not merely a coating. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ "A well-rounded hunting battery might include: 500 AccRel Nyati, 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger, 375Ruger or 338WM, 308 or 270, 243, 223" -- Conserving creation, hunting the harvest.

I have found RL17 works well in 243win with Barnes 80gr. TTSX and 375 Ruger with Nosler 300gr. Accubond and as well as Woodleigh 350gr. PP.

It is my go to powder for 130 gr bullets in the 6.5 Creedmoor. Very accurate , very good velocity. Perhaps RL 16 can improve on it . I don't know. I have not found a lot of velocity loss with 17. And that was when chronographing at -32-35° ambient. It lost some velocity, sure . But nothing like I've lost with RL 15 in other carts. And similar burn rate powders like H414/Win 760 are terrible in the cold . Yes , they are ball powders . But still. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. I normally don't use the brake to hunt with, but its there if I need it...Ive been using it since I got my hand mutilated in a roping accident and wore a cast for 6 months as they did reconstruction...recoil hits that middle finger when I shoot, thus my using the brake more..but as it heals I will use it less Im sure as the recoil of a .338 isn't bothersome at all..Ive been shooting much bigger calibers in Africa for many years...Just have to wait and see how it all turns out..but either way Im good with it..My .375 is magnaported and its still a bit bothersome, but magnaport isn't as good as a screw on brake, and I like the thread protector option and a brake best. Im pretty much locked in to a 338 and 9.3 as to recoil these days. I use Rl22, Rl 19 in my .338..My favorite load is a 225 gr. Accubond at 2913 FPS in the Ruger African..I also really like the 250 Nosler Partition at almost 2800 FPS and the 300 gr Woodleigh at 2400 to 2500 FPS..The .338, like the 30-06 is such a versatile caliber in every respect. That low an SD , if that comes in at a high accuracy node that is long range accuracy SD. Tho not quite the BC for long range . That powder is still Really getting the good stuff done. I enjoy developing loads. I do not accept any load that does not have a 10 shot extreme spread of more than 20 FPS and an SD of 10 or less. With careful loading I have not found a rifle I own yet that can not meet these standards. To get these loads though it entails everything from weighing bullet, cases, empty and loaded and sorting batches to name just a few. My .308 Match load with a 175gr. SMK has a SD of 2. At 100 yards it consistently groups 3 shots into one hole. Powder of coarse is Varget.

A big part of the reason I want to go to the 338 Winchester is brass, bullet and ammo availability. And the fact that in a pinch I can make brass from all kinds of calibre cartridges. 7 mag and 300 Winchester being 2 of the most prolific up here. Anneal it, neck it up , check its length, load and shoot it. If its too long a quick trim and chamfer. Some of it won't win any accuracy awards. But it will fill the freezer. And , there is high quality , readily available brass . Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action.
