Here's a few pics of a rifle Mark Penrod built for me.
It's on a 1940 Mod. 70 action w/ 3X9 Khales
LOP 13 3/4", Weight 7# 8oz (rifle and Talley bases)
Scope of work:
Blueprint action
Surface grind bottom of receiver
Krieger #2 Echol's contour barrel
Weld Bridge and blind rear guard screw hole
Re-cut and surface grind loading port
Trigger Sears Surface Ground and polished..2#
3 panel checkered Penrod bolt handle
Drill & Tap Receiver for 8X40 screws
Counter bore bases for 8X40
Hone raceways and magazine well & polish
Heat treated Hex head action screws
Pillar bedded action and pressure bedded tip
Range tested for accuracy
Fine Pattern Jewell bolt body and mag follower (approx 3300 jewels on bolt)
Saftey timed
Here's a pic of the rear of the action. Notice the welded up bridge and blinded screw hole and checkered bolt release.

Sendero300Mark said he regularly got 5/8" groups with some loads of IMR 4350 and I believe N550 and 165gr ballistic tips.
I shot several 5 shot groups that are 1".
57.5 grs. H4350 180gr Accubonds 5 shots= 2839fps
58 grs. IMR 4350 165gr BT's = 2904fps
I haven't shot these at any greater distance than 100 yards yet but both loads are same POI at 100 yards and will put the 180gr. partitions in the same place.

Those are conetrol mounts aren't they? I like the low profile....

I have never actually weighed it but it has to be right at 8 pounds. Those are low Conetrols and a VX-III 1.75-6X32 scope with Premier Reticles #4 reticle.
It's a keeper!

It's just a real soft blue....

Sendero300Mark sent me approx 40 photo's during the build. Also a couple other nice touches.
On the left side of the barrel where the caliber is marked he put .30-06
On the other side he put Model 70
On top of the barrel about a third of the way to the crown is : Mark Penrod-Gunmaker
Mark also did some work on the heat treating. I think my action was 66RC and he brought it down to 59RC.
He's an amazing gunsmith and every little thing on the rifle is smooth, also amazing inletting..
and on top of all that he's a pleasure to deal with and I learned quite a few things from him.

Question: what did he do to the area behind the tang? It looks like there is a different material (color change) between the tang area and the stock. Is this some kind of bedding material or what?

CAS IIThe stock was inlet for a regular tang. It looks like Mark reshaped the tang to a Pre-War style then filled the inlet with Marine-Tex and shaped the stock to perfectly match the tang.
It's apparent that he ordered the stock from McMillan with no bolt notch cut (and probably no ejection port cut), so that he could position the action perfectly to match the stock, then cut he bolt notch to match up exactly with no extra gap. It is a lot of extra work, but the results are worth it, IMO.
You're right, it is nice work.

You're right, it is nice work.
The only way to get a D'arcy Echols stock is to buy a rifle from him or order it from him and they come unfinished, inletted for the action and barrel, but not the bolt handle. I sent my Model 70 .375 H&H to McMillan for fitting and painting. Its MOA at 100 yds.
If you are going to carry a big stick, you've got to whack someone with it at least every once in while.

CAS IIActually you can order any McMillan stock without the bolt notch and ejection port cut.
You are right about the Echols stocks, I think I have 5 of them in process in my shop right now.
