No. You must drill the bore hole, all of the side ports and the muzzle threads. They're a great deal for the money you pay!

What's the most accurate brake available? I was wondering if you could get a Vais to shoot 0.5"?

AR:

I have several Vais brakes; they work well. Only downside is the ports are all the way around (360 deg) so it kicks up a lot of dust when shooting prone.

I should just get a 7mm Weatherby and forget the brake.

Barnes TTSX 150, H4350 68.5grs., 3165fps is more than enough rifle for bull elk and manageable recoil.

Vais brakes are good, but they use a bastard thread size. There are other good brakes on the market.

In my experience, Vais will cut almost any thread you want on their brakes. You just have to call and ask. I've had excellent service from them for several years.

A good job is sometimes just a series of expertly fixed fark-ups.
Let's see.... is it 20 years experience or is it 1 years experience 20 times?

I buy mine from Harrels Precision. I used a few Vais in the old days and wasn't able to see any advantage.

6 or 7 years ago at the Super Shoot Jim Carmivhel gave me 3 of the Vais units. Kinda confirmed my thoughts.
What ever happened to old man Vais? I know he sold the company because of health reasons and re emerged a few years later trying to sue the feller that he sold it to. I think he lost, but forgot about the issue.

I've moved on to Mag-na-porting. Keeps the barrel down.

I prefer Magnaporting to a muzzle brake also. Not anywhere near as loud to the shooter and does a good enough job. Also magnaporting doesn't blow up any dust if you're shooting prone.

HARRELL'S BRAKES AT HALF THE PRICE...use the one with the side slots...or make your own...there are also plenty of brakes out there with NO holes on the bottom...should be a non issue if you think about it...I'm slow and it took me a couple of shots to figure out the dust problem and how to correct it. Roll Eyes Big Grin Eeker

My last two brakes were from Witt Machine clamp-ons...500 S&W Mag and 6.5 x 300 WBY and one will go on my 28 Nosler if I ever get the barrel...easy on, easy off and work great...a bit ugly to some eyes...but ugly is GOOD...I LOVE UGLY...if it works. Big Grin lol

I can guarantee you that no brake will shoot nearly that accurately. In fact, Vias brakes won't shoot at all. However, they do shoot much better with a gun attached to them.

No sure whether to agree or disagree with your "tongue in cheek???" reply, Stonecreek....I've never used a Vias, I'm TOO CHEEP", but I've used M.B.'s for over 50 years at least on everything from 22-250 up, and I DON'T like rifles that won't shoot 3 rounds into <0.5".

Sticking a brake on the end of a rifle DOESN'T guarantee anything but recoil reduction...Period.

Accuracy lies in the tuning of the rifle, ammo and SHOOTER.

I pretty much guarantee NO long range shooter would use a brake if it WASN'T capable of producing small groups. There are lots of vids showing kills out at 500 yds and beyond wit braked rifles...and I've killed a ton of sagerats out beyond 700 yds with braked rifles.

So I don't know for certain if a VIAS brake, AND depending on the caliber, will do 0.500", but I've made my own version of that brake that works perfectly well...but for the price economy I use Harrell's...I can't make my own for the convenience...it is a PITA to put those holes in the brake end with the machine equipment I have.

OR...did I miss read your offering???

George was my gunsmith for a while. He sold all his equipment, and retired to Greece for the second time.

I got on okay with him, and was sorry he vamoosed.

His brakes are nice, you can get a varmint/target version with no holes on the bottom (if indexed Correctly), or at least you could.

The older I get the better I like brakes..One is about as good as another, they all do the same thing and that's reduce recoil by displacing gases..

I have only shot 1 braked rifle and it was an older Tikka in 300 Winchester Magnum. Nice to shoot.

George Vais worked for years on my guns. Mostly shotguns but rifles as well. He was a magician. One issue I had was a Beretta BL Series 28 gauge that would intermittently miss fire. Two gunsmiths failed to resolve the issue. I took it to George. He held the gun up to his ear and listened to the hammer fall on the lower barrel. I'm not making this up. He bumped the butt of the gun to set the hammer for the top barrel. Pulled the trigger and said in his heavy Greek accent "you have the weak recoil spring in the top barrel" My response was BS George. He replied "order the spring from Beretta" and I will put it in. I still have he little BL5 28 gauge and it never miss fired again. George sold his business and entered into an agreement not to compete (manufacture muzzle breaks) with the purchaser. He evidently did compete several years after the sale. He was sued in Federal Court and unfortunately represented himself. He lost at trial. I don't remember the damages but they were not insubstantial. I exchanged emails with him about 18 months ago. He is back in Greece and is not doing well. He feels he was wronged by the legal system and is very bitter. Sad situation, George is good guy and one hell of a gunsmith.

The best brake is the largest brake, also the most unsightly...I like the slimlines that match the barrel crown, they don't work as well as those big ugly brakes, but they do work well enough to suit about any hunter..
