Never been much of a lever action guy but latly a few has come my way. Picked up a like new older Marlin 336 in 35 Rem. with micro groove rifling. Ordered some reloading dies but need some advice on bullet weight. Also would like to try some cast bullets. Can .357 mag. pistol bullets be shot out of the 35 Remington? Thanks to all

For deer hunting, stick with good ol' 200gr. Roundnose Remington Corelock or Sierra pro-hunter. That cartridge couldn't be more perfect than with the 200 running at 2000-2200 fps.

.357 mag bullets? Yep, I shot up a lot of 125 and 158gr. jacketed bullets. I think I ran them at around 2650fps in the end. They were pretty devastating on bunny rabbits!

Nice cartridge unfortunately not marketed at all.Long used for eastern deer and black bear .
200 gr is best .
If you decide to try cast bulets --many say microgroove is not accurate with cast .Not true !!! However microgroove grooves are half as deep as standard so it's more sensitive to both bullet hardness and bullet diameter ! Purchased bullets then may not perform well but harder ,larger ones will work well.

Mojave: Go to the Marlin owners' forum and look for load data and experience with the new LeveRevolution "gummy-tip" bullets in .35.

Yep. That bullet is MADE for that cartridge, and it works exceptionall well on game. And don't try to hot rod it, no matter how fast a roundnose bullet starts it will shed speed pretty fast anyway.

Stick to standard loads and you can get excellant accuracy and effect from that superb old woods hunting round out to at least 150 yards; few of us can ever see game at half that distance in the woods!

The 200 grn RN in Rem, Sierra or Hornady brands all work well.

The Speer 180 works pretty well too.

I would buy a Lee factory crimp die and crimp the case into the crimp cannelure.

Pay extra care to the setup of the FL die or your cases may not last very long and they are no longer cheap and easy to find in some areas.

I would set the FL die to bump the shoulder back about .001 to .002.

Speer makes a 220 FN that works real nice, especially in my Rem 760.

The 200 gr roundnose may be better in your Marlin.

Not 2 hrs ago a young fellow and his dad stopped by to show me his moose. he shot it with just that rifle/load you mentioned. The smile said he was happy with it!

Thanks to all. there has been a couple cartridges that I have been interested in for quite a while. One was the 35 Remington for up close and the other is the Winchester .264 Mag. I was able to get both this year.The Win .264 in a Ruger #1. I will enjoy playing with both for the next couple of years.A friend sold me a like new Leupold 4x with a post style cross hair that I'm going to put on the 35 Remington Marlin 336.

That is a sweet old cartridge that I like more than a 30/30. Leaves a good blood trail too.

Mine never left much of a blood trail because the buck did not go very far.

I traded up for a 358 Win, but Ill tell you what. Those 336 Marlins are some smooth, sweet classic lever guns. I liked using the Hornady 200 gn RN in mine. Fabulous deer rifle in the thick stuff. I still have some Rlr 12 that I liked to use in it. I expect the Rlr 10X should perform well also..
